If you place them in these areas, your profile will be optimized for recruiter searches, and your views will increase. Plus, you’ll start having more people reach out to you about openings.     I received a message yesterday from a job seeker who said, "The market is slow. I've updated my resume and LinkedIn profile; I'm connected to tons of recruiters; what should I do now?" Here are 7 next steps you can take in your job search: 1. Make a target company list. Research each company on LinkedIn, follow their page, and engage with their updates and sponsored posts. This increases your visibility and puts a spotlight on your profile when company recruiters view it. 2. Engage with your connection's updates on LinkedIn. Commenting on posts increases your profile views by 4X = more visibility for you. 3. Who are you connected to within your target companies? Reach out, touch base, and start a conversation. If they're active on LinkedIn, engage with their posts. 4. Who can you connect to who works at your target companies? (Look for 2nd-degree connections). Introduce yourself. 5. Run a search on LinkedIn for hiring managers and decision-makers in your industry and at your target companies. Connect and engage consistently. 6. Write content. Share your expertise in status updates. Posting boosts your profile views by 4X! Again, more visibility for you with recruiters/hiring managers. 7. Look at the job postings on LinkedIn to see if the hiring manager's profile is attached to the post. If it is, reach out and message them. Let them know you applied. Save this post.     The hidden job market found me. I was in a position for a year and the salary increase I was promised never came through (tip: get that in writing, lesson learned the hard way). I shared with my parents that I was going to start searching again. A week later my Dad's colleague reached out to him and said, "Hey, isn't your daughter in HR?" One of his client companies had an opening and because he and my Dad had often chatted he knew I was in HR in the same industry. He reached out and asked me to apply. I did, got the offer and a 40% salary increase. It's not always who you know, it may be who they know (weak ties). Don't be afraid to let those closest to you know that you're looking - and what type of roles you're targeting *key piece of info*. A 2024 survey from LinkedIn found that 70% of its members found roles through connections. 60% of people from an HBR study found their most recent role through a past colleague.     Job seekers: what type of goals are you focused on in your job search? Those you can control or those outside of your control? Why does it matter so much? When we focus on job search goals outside of our control: - We experience decreased motivation and increased frustration. Progress is less visible and the end result (landing the job) feels farther away and more difficult to reach. - It negatively impacts our performance. Not just creating uncertainty and a lack of clarity, but it's hard to see and evaluate our progress. - Outcome-based goals are focused on things we cannot control and lead to burnout. Our efforts become unsustainable. (Only so many hours a day you can spend applying online) When we focus on landing a job (outside our control) instead of action-based goals we experience all of the above ↑ frustration, defeat and disappointment with our search. But when we focus on action-based goals in our search, like: - Learning to network - Growing out network - Learning to network on LinkedIn - Using LinkedIn strategically in our search - Making warm outreach & cold outreach - Creating a balanced job search plan & acting on that plan - Creating a target company list, then actively reaching out to advocates/close connections in our network who are connected to our target companies. → We feel greater motivation and clearer direction. → Our performance improves and we see sustainable progress toward our desired results. → We see the small wins and progress we're making, we learn + grow, and we refine/improve our approach so we're even more effective. Having a long-term vision is important - you do want/need to land the ideal role, but success in your job search comes from consistently executing the right daily actions.
