$200K engineering job. 35 years of experience. A client of ours just walked away from an opportunity over his GPA. He graduated college in 1989. They require a 3.0 GPA or better. For any degree, no matter when you got it. He doesn’t have his transcripts and will not request them. If there’s an award for dumbest made up rules in hiring, this one takes the cake 🎂. Or trophy 🏆. I guess his stellar career of super duper intelligence, endless promotions and leadership experience isn’t nearly as important as whether he got a C in Intro to Kayaking or Pattern Making for Dog Sweaters. Yes, those are both real courses. It’s like the Wild West out there kids. I guess you have to be prepared for anything. Including asinine rules. #TellMeYouAreJoking #JobSearch #ResumeWriting

After reviewing a client's old resume, I estimated his salary to be around $85K per year. I was off by $100K! When we finally got on the phone, I asked him, "What is your current salary?" He replied, “My base is $165K, plus a $20K annual bonus that I've received every year for the past six years.” I told him, "That's a problem." Most experienced hiring managers will come to the same incorrect conclusion I did based on your resume alone. He chuckled and said, "Well, that’s exactly why we’re on the phone!" Here’s the lesson: ✔ Look at your resume with a very critical eye. ✔ Does it genuinely reflect your skills, experience, and worth? ✔ Can someone accurately gauge the salary range you're aiming for? If your resume doesn't convey your true value, it's time to be more assertive. Set aside the need to be humble and confidently tell your story. Resumes that scream six-figure worth open doors to six-figure opportunities. Know your value. Now is not the time to be shy. Now is not the time to be humble. Now is not the time to quiet. I've never seen a more competitive job market in the 24 years I've been in business. There is a LOT of talent out there. Most people go into a job search thinking, "I need to take what I can get." I say screw that. Go get what you are worth. I got this text this morning from a client of ours who lost her job 4 months ago. She just took a job offer making $60K more than she was in the job she lost. Do you think she was scared, nervous, worried? Yes, of course she was. But she also knew that if she couldn't tell her professional story, or BELIEVE in herself, no one else would either. We told her she was amazing. We forced her to quantify her results. We made her dig deep for examples of her successes. We encouraged her to apply above her pay grade. And so she did.
