REGION 9, lets help support National Weather Service Did you know the National Weather Service's operating budget runs on a cup of coffee per person? Walk into most coffee shops; a basic cup of coffee will cost you about $4. Multiply that by the U.S. population (332 million), and you get the current National Weather Service (NWS) operating budget, about $1.3 billion. These funds protect the entire United States of America, territories, and adjacent waters, from devastating weather events. However, that meager funding has been slashed for this fiscal year, which will negatively impact the NWS' ability to conduct its mission. For fiscal year 2024 appropriations, NWS has an effective $45 million less than needed to sustain FY23 levels of support. This has implications for everyone, including local emergency managers like you. How can you support the NWS? The IAEM-USA Government Affairs Committee asks you to contact your elected officials and ask them to support our NWS partners. Visit the IAEM NWS Budget Support page for more information, including: - Links to elected officials contact information. - Sample letter template. - Downloadable infographic to share. - Thank you for your help in these efforts to communicate with decision-makers to impress upon them the importance NWS plays in keeping our community safe. https://lnkd.in/g6f8_Rr5 #NWS | #IAEMR9 | #weather | #emergencymanagement
