Fears of a dramatic and widespread fiscal cliff for school districts after the mostly flexible federal COVID-19 emergency funding dissipates seem to be overstated, say education finance and policy experts. But the transition to regular appropriations won't be easy. Some school communities face hiring freezes, school consolidations and needed facility improvements, as well as ongoing demand to support students' mental health and academic needs. #SchoolFunding #ESSER

As some school districts begin to pilot artificial intelligence tools, teachers could see some of their workload burden alleviated. While not a guarantee, if districts are thoughtful about which AI tools and supports they provide to teachers, the technology has the potential to improve teacher retention by making the job more manageable, said Bree Dusseault, of the Center on Reinventing Public Education. Anywhere generative AI tools can help teachers focus on their core roles and feel most effective with students, “I think that increases just enjoyment of the job and a sense of satisfaction,” Dusseault said. Have you seen schools effectively use AI to alleviate teacher workload? If so, how? #AI #TeacherShortages #StaffedUp #EdChat

States and districts with COVID relief spending extensions have an extra 14 months to liquidate funds. Justices on Friday rebuffed the Biden administration’s emergency request to allow noncontroversial parts of Title IX regulations to move forward in some states with injunctions. That means the entire rule will be on pause in 10 states with a temporary injunction while lawsuits challenging the regulations work their way through the courts. The U.S. Department of Education said it disagreed with the ruling and stands by its final Title IX rule. The department plans to “continue to defend those rules” in litigation pending in lower courts, an agency spokesperson said. #titleIX #k12 #edchat
