Happy back to school season! 🎒 This month, LinkedIn Design assembled a total of 36 backpacks, each filled with essential school supplies, and included heartfelt inspirational notes for the students who will receive them. We donated the backpacks and school supplies to City Team in San Jose, and Volunteers of America Operations Backpack in New York. These organizations equip children living in poverty or in shelters with school supplies they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. 🍎 ✏

🏝️ Are you tracking your time off? 💡 Selene Chew, Senior Design Manager, shares some helpful insights on the benefits of knowing how much time off you and your team are taking to improve employee well-being. #vacation #timeoff #LinkedInDesign #uxdesign #productdesign

Does your company offer unlimited time off? LinkedIn does. As a manager, I track the number of time offs taken by my team, not for the reasons you might think. Research shows that employees with unlimited time off take less time off than those with limited time for various reasons. Burnout is real, and breaks are crucial for long-term success and improved performance. Previously, as an individual contributor, I monitored my own time off to ensure I took a minimum number each year. Now, as a manager, I oversee my team's time off to prevent burnout. Interestingly, I've noticed that top performers often take fewer breaks, putting them at higher risk of burnout. For individual contributors: 🤓 Actively track your time off and aim for at least 10 days a year, the national average (or 18 including paid sick days). 🎄 To reduce pressure, plan time off around holidays since others are also out of the office. For managers: 💃 Lead by example in taking time off and promote a culture where time off is seen as necessary, not a request for permission (excluding breaks longer than a week). 🎖 Watch out for burnout in top performers and address why they aren't taking time off. Ensure they have the support to take breaks and consider suggesting a day off when needed.

Last week, Cristie Huang and I had the pleasure of speaking in front of a group of aspiring design students at BRIDGEGOOD. BRIDGEGOOD is a non-profit organization based in Oakland focused on helping under-resourced and underrepresented students. Their UX Apprenticeship program is focused on teaching students practical design skills, career improvement skills, and tech literacy. We did a presentation about how to use LinkedIn effectively as a job seeker in design. Some key tips about your LinkedIn profile to help you stand out are that most people don't think of: 1) Put your portfolio in as many places as possible. Add it to your top card, contact info, featured, about, and experience. The more places you can cross-link and show your materials will help people discover your work. 2) Having relevant skills help you show up 27x more in search results for recruiters. You can add up to 50 of them on your profile. If unsure of what to add, look at job postings and use the skills from that are applicable to you and add them to your profile. 3) A lot of people are unaware of the settings on your profile to edit public visibility and your LinkedIn URL. Clean up your LinkedIn URL so it's easy to share and add to your external materials. Also if you want to be found publicly across search engines for more job prospects, turn on your public visibility settings. Hope these little tips resonate with you all. Thank you to Elisa Feng and Shaun Tai for inviting us. It's always a pleasure to be able to influence the next generation of future designers! #uxdesign #productdesign #students #designforsocialgood #linkedinlife #linkedindesign

386 people have already registered for my FREE 30-minute session tomorrow on Maven about Ace Your Design Interview: Showcase Your Best Self and Work at 10:00 AM PST. My goal is to give you practical tools to help you get hired. https://lnkd.in/gPeAmSNB Here are what some students have said about this content before: - This is what I needed to hear to help me re-direct my thinking. I’ve been writing up new case studies and become laser focused on the technicalities. I’ve been losing sight of the bigger picture and this was a much needed reminder. - Had an incredibly insightful discussion with Harrison about my portfolio. This was the session I needed, his feedback touched on the parts of my work I was most uncertain about. - The session with Harrison was so awesome! He gave a lot of very insightful recommendations and guidance on how I should tell the story for my case study, and what a hiring manager is looking for a candidate. I have a much clearer view of how I should approach my case now. In tomorrows lightning session you’ll learn: - The most important information to construct your narrative. - Case study best practices. - Bringing out your unique value beyond the pixels. RSVP for tomorrow (it's free) Comment below if I’ll see you there!

🌊 Friday Reflection: Slowing down in work and life can bring clarity, focus, and help uncover things you might have otherwise missed. I think we found the connection to both work and life. Right, Keri? Have a great weekend, folks! #LinkedInLife #Professional #SlowDown #Focus

In the mornings, I sometimes head out to the beach and look for sea glass. It’s a great way to get a walk in first thing, enjoy some fresh air, and either catch up on podcasts or just listen to the waves and my own thoughts. But sometimes the search for sea glass can get competitive (seriously, it’s a thing), and I’ve found myself rushing to cover more ground in search of the elusive frosty treasures before anyone else can get them. When you’ve been glassing for a while, you’ll start to recognize where you’re most likely to find glass. This includes at the tidal mark, where debris collects, and in rougher, rockier areas. So this morning, when I found myself in one such pebbly spot and coming up empty, I thought, “Slow down.” So I did. I settled into a squat, breathed, and looked. As my eyes adjusted, all sorts of things showed up: glass, including the one in the photo, as well as sea-worn pottery. It was hard to believe I’d missed all of it, and by giving myself time to really see what I was looking at, so much more became obvious. I’m sure there’s a lesson about work or life here, but damned if I know what it is.
