“Arenas” are industries that transform the business landscape, defined by high growth and dynamism. They capture a significant share of economic growth and experience rapid market share changes. Our new research identifies 18 future arenas that could reshape the global economy by 2040, generating $29 trillion to $48 trillion in revenues. These range from AI and cybersecurity to robotics and biotech. Today's 12 arenas, like e-commerce and electric vehicles, showed a 10% revenue CAGR and 16% market cap CAGR from 2005 to 2020, tripling their global GDP share to 9%. Arenas earn greater profits, spawn global giants, and offer strong opportunities for new entrants. They differ significantly from non-arenas in growth and dynamism. Three ingredients create an "arena-creation potion": business model or tech step changes, escalatory investments, and a large or growing addressable market, leading to intense competition.
