Can you treat a UTI if the organisms are antibiotic resistant? In part two of our interview with Nicholas Sanford, PhD, BCMAS from MicroGenDX, we answer the following questions: ● What is the difference between detecting antibiotic resistance genes and conducting antibiotic susceptibility testing? ● Do MicroGenDX test results indicate which organisms are considered to be pathogens vs. those that are considered beneficial? ● How is low/medium/high bacterial load determined for UTI test results and what does it mean? ● Is it normal for bladder organisms to change over time, and for test results to also therefore be different each time? ● Why do beneficial organisms rarely show up in MicroGenDX tests? Are they deliberately omitted from the results, or are they not detected in the first place? ● If multiple organisms are listed in UTI test results, is there any indication of which may be causing the symptoms? ● Do MicroGenDX test results provide antibiotic recommendations? ● Why is it often necessary for someone to test, treat, then retest and possibly treat again? • As a reference laboratory, we often do not know what specific events lead up to the use of our test, how our results are used, and what the outcomes will be. Occasionally though, we do get to interact with patients directly and it is incredibly rewarding to know that the work our colleagues are doing in the MicroGenDX lab is not only helping patients quell their suffering and end the cycle of ineffective half-measures but providing hope to those still suffering. After a few conversations with a patient who was sick and tired of being sick and tired, I got one of those occasional rewarding messages and permission to share! "I can’t thank you enough for your patience and the wisdom you’ve shared over the last month. I’m still over the moon to receive normal test results this time! As you well know, I was doubtful that it was possible. I am beyond relieved to have been able to utilize MicroGenDX’s testing and find actual healing. I remember experiencing UTIs as a child but hadn’t given them much thought until I felt that strange yet familiar burn last spring. I never dreamed I would have three more “separate” infections in the next 13 months. I used telemedicine for treatment because the symptoms can take hold almost in an instant and I inevitably experienced the most painful of them on weekends, at night, or while traveling. Anyone who has experienced urinary tract infections knows how urgently medication and relief are required once they flare up, and telemedicine gets a prescription in my hand so much faster than my GP. I only wish I had tested with MicroGenDX from the very first episode last March. Had I known at the time that I would only feel healed until another UTI in December, I would have looked for alternative treatment. Not to mention the UTIs that followed in February and April. Thanks to your calm explanations and answers to my one million questions, I now understand that it was very possibly the same infection the entire time, being knocked down with random antibiotics, but never fully clearing. Before your test, I kept thinking that, surely, the doctors knew what they were doing and that I was still getting infections because I was doing something wrong. Or I was genetically wrong. The recurrences always filled me with more and more dread because I know that the more UTIs you get the more UTIs you tend to get. What an awful cycle to be trapped in! I can’t express how liberating it is to be set free from it. Thank you for presenting the scientific information in ways I could understand and for treating me like a human deserving of healing. More people need this type of testing in their lives, and sooner rather than later!" If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, send us a message or visit https://lnkd.in/e4fEc9py

One of the most frequent questions we get from our community is: Can you have a UTI even if your standard urine culture is negative? Research has demonstrated that standard urine culture has many limitations, often leaving patients with negative results when an infection is present. In part one of our interview with Dr. Nicholas Sanford, PhD, BCMAS from MicroGenDX, we answer the following questions and more: ● Why does standard urine culture miss many infections? ● What is the difference between PCR and NGS testing for UTI? ● Can NGS (next generation sequencing) test detect biofilms? ● How do you know when to do UTI testing vs. STI testing? ● What is the best way to collect a urine sample for this type of test? ● How long should you wait after taking antibiotics, to collect a urine sample for testing? ● Is there any evidence that biofilm disruptors enhance the accuracy of test results? ● Does testing when UTI symptoms are not present provide any benefit? Watch the interview over on our YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/dZQDCMUT Thanks to Dr. Sanford for answering our community's questions, and to everyone who submitted a question! If you're an expert who would like to share insights with our community, we'd love to hear from you. #utitesting #antibioticresistance #recurrentuti #chronicuti #womenshealth #bladdersmatter

  • Attention ophthalmologists! MicroGenDX is seeking collaborators for the development of a comprehensive molecular diagnostic test for diagnosing ophthalmological infections. The proposed test will utilize MicroGenDX's qPCR+NGS approach to provide identification of bacteria and fungi as well as viral and parasitic organisms associated with ocular infections. We are looking for physicians and researchers who would be willing to collaborate on this test validation and future studies of diagnostic accuracy. If you are interested, please send us a message!

Calling all HCPs that deal with UTIs! Over the past 14 years, we've been dedicated to serving patients and providers in tackling troublesome infections. And now, we're thrilled to share a groundbreaking development with you. The Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) has taken a monumental step by recommending NGS for infections. Specifically, NGS is now listed as the diagnostic tool for Skin and Soft Tissue Infections. This is a game-changer in our fight against infections, and we're confident that this endorsement will soon extend to other infection types. But we're not stopping there. As providers treating urologic infections, we're setting our sights on the American Urological Association (AUA). We're determined to ask for their endorsement of NGS in their upcoming updated guideline on Recurrent Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections in Women. Why is this important? Because endorsing NGS could revolutionize patient care, improve practice outcomes, benefit other laboratories, and strengthen the entire healthcare system. Imagine the impact of moving commercial insurance plans to support NGS testing for microbial identification! So, here's our call to action: Will you join us in signing the petition below to urge the AUA to endorse NGS when traditional cultures fail to provide symptom resolution? Together, let's pave the way for better diagnostics and better outcomes for our patients. https://loom.ly/Q1E0nyg #NGS #UTI #InfectionControl #HealthcareInnovation #MicroGenDX #Urology #Primarycare
