Accurate Microbial Identification using Next Generation DNA Sequencing.
About us
MicroGenDX provides qPCR+NGS sequencing for the detection of infectious diseases. The American Medical Association (AMA) and Medicare have issued a billing code to MicroGenDX to provide this testing service, recognizing this technology as medically necessary. MicroGenDX is trusted by over 39,000 physicians worldwide and has helped over 900,000 patients with diagnostic testing for their chronic and life-threatening infections. MicroGenDX is a College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited and Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendments (CLIA) licensed clinical laboratory. Tens of thousands of patients with chronic and often life-threatening infections have benefited from MicroGenDX’s work. MicroGenDX's NGS technology offers several advantages over traditional culture-based methods for identifying microorganisms. It can detect a wider range of microorganisms, including those that are difficult to culture or grow in a laboratory. It also provides more accurate and comprehensive results, as it can detect multiple microorganisms in a single sample and identify them at the species or strain level. Additionally, NGS technology is faster than traditional methods, allowing for quicker diagnosis and treatment decisions. MicroGenDX's testing services are used in a variety of settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, dental offices, and veterinary clinics. Their technology has been applied to a wide range of clinical conditions, including chronic wounds, orthopedic infections, respiratory infections, and urinary tract infections, among others.

At MicroGenDX, we believe data holds the key to innovation. On this #WorldStatisticsDay, we're excited to showcase a key finding from a paper authored by a scientist on our staff: a network map illustrating the complex relationships between wound microbiome species and how patient genetics could tip the scale towards certain types of infection. 🔍 Tipton et al. 2020 revealed that genetic variations in patients significantly influence wound microbiome diversity and infection types. Here, a single mutation was found to be associated with the abundance of two very common bacteria often found in chronic wounds, Staphylococcus epidermidis (#12) or Pseudomonas aeruginosa (#10) in the graph below (Fig. 2). The network plot highlights the different ways that these two selected species interacted with other microbial species, with black lines showing positive associations and orange lines showing negative ones. Staphylococcus epidermidis is sometimes thought to be less harmful or even potentially beneficial in the context of an open wound. The strong negative correlations observed between S. epidermidis and known pathogens like S. aureus and Pseudomonas seem to back up the idea that S. epidermidis may have a beneficial role in preventing colonization by worse pathogens. These data help explain why some wounds struggle to heal and why some patients may seem prone to frequent re-infection by the same organism! This visualization is a powerful reminder that statistics aren’t just numbers – they drive discovery and lead to more personalized treatment options for chronic wounds. 📉 Read more of our research here: https://loom.ly/XGe1i_k #DataScience #Microbiome #PersonalizedMedicine #MedicalResearch #WoundHealing #StatisticsInHealthcare #MicroGenDX #Statistics

We’re thrilled to share that Lori Johnson, NP, along with Dr. Drue Orwig and Craig Tipton (of MicroGenDX), has completed groundbreaking research showcasing the power of Next-Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) in guiding targeted antimicrobial therapies for chronic, non-healing wounds. Their study reveals how NGS can pinpoint precise microbial profiles, leading to dramatic wound healing in patients where traditional treatments had failed. For those heading to the SAWC Fall Conference in Las Vegas, stop by the poster area on Friday, October 4th at 6:15-7:30pm to see Lori Johnson’s poster presentation. #SAWC2024 #WoundCare #NGSResearch #MicroGenDX #TopicalAntimicrobial #ChronicWounds #SAWC #NGS #WoundHealing #Research

I have got plans for this one! More to come on this case in the next months. 42 yo male S/P “train wreck”. ICM score 6 with +NGS per Microgen DX (8 organisms). Culture negative. B Host. Will have to bring everything to bear to make this a success. 🙏🏼 #ThanksMicrogenDX #OxfordPerformanceMaterials #3DSide #LINKHingeinaBox

Staphylococcus lugdunensis + w/ open biopsy per next generation sequencing via Microgen DX. Negative cultures from the open biopsy. Now that we have identified the problem, now to work...
The second International Consensus Meeting (ICM) on periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) was held in Philadelphia in 2018. We are all looking forward to the next congress in 2025 in Istanbul. In the interim the recommendations from 2018 still provide invaluable assistance in decision making. Case: 66 yo male S/P pelvic acetabular trauma. Serum markers elevated. Dry tap…time for an open biopsy (Nex-Gen DNA sequencing per Microgen Dx and standard cultures). #ICM #Istanbul #ParviziGehrke #ICMapp

Urine Pathogenicity Now Available on All Reports As of September 1st, 2024 MicroGenDX will now be offering a pathogenicity rating on all qPCR+NGS urine samples. This rates all organisms found in that report as: [P] = Known Pathogen [C] = Commensal / Unlikely Pathogen [U] = Unknown This column is found to the right of the NGS% column . These ratings are based on an in-house developed AI algorithm. Please note that these ratings are for healthcare provider reference only and assume the patient is not immunocompromised. The final treatment decisions rest at the physician's discretion, and all patient health factors should be taken into account. This report is currently only available for Urine Samples. Exciting Discovery: How NGS Diagnosed Whipple’s Disease when other tests failed! Discover the power of Next Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) in uncovering rare infections like Whipple’s Disease! Our latest case study showcases the clinical utility offered by MicroGenDX's NGS testing, revealing Tropheryma whipplei when traditional tests failed. https://loom.ly/jXU0F8Q 🔍 Patient's journey: An African-American female in her early 40’s saw her primary care physician after suffering from several weeks of worsening dyspnea with cough and arthralgias. The patient underwent a bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and lung biopsy. The artifacts from these operations were subjected to a litany of medical tests, including: -Bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) -BAL bacterial cultures -BAL acid-fast bacilli cultures -BAL fungal cultures -Aspergillus galactomannan of the BAL -BAL cytology for malignancy -BAL Pneumocystis jirovecii polymerase chain reaction (PCR) -Hypersensitivity pneumonitis panel -BAL pneumonia PCR panel -Lung biopsy Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain However, a MicroGenDX NGS test detected the presence of Tropheryma whipplei in the BAL sample. Furthermore, an EGD revealed chronically active Heliobacter gastritis and normal duodenal specimens with no evidence of T. whipplei. No MicroGenDX testing was used in the GI tract.
