Jeppesen Terminal’s internationally recognized peaked roof, designed by Fentress Architects is reflective of snow-capped mountains and evokes the early history of Colorado when Native American teepees were located across the Great Plains. It was also one of the first truly huge projects where MONOKOTE fire protection MK-6/HY was used, with a centralized pump station and with product pumped vast distances, saving time and money. Good article from Adam M. Irons, CCM, PCS about intumescent fireproofing. Well written and accurate. There is one issue with it that we would like to comment on / clarify. Under "Benefits of Intumescent Fireproofing" it states that they are more space-efficient and aesthetically appealing. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, intumescents should never be used in a confined space or applied to areas where something can impede the char growth. If you don't have enough space for a cementitious product such as MONOKOTE fire protection , you don't have enough room for an intumescent. As a industry rule you need 30 times the applied thickness of space around the protected member. #YieldProductionTrust.

Hey Bill McHugh and Mark St. Onge - is full scale , fully-loaded testing of passive fire protection really necessary? Look at the results below - either one IFRM supplier has a really great product compared to the rest of them or full-scale , fully loaded testing really does make a difference in terms of the final thickness of product......or maybe they just got lucky. MONOKOTE fire protection fully supports the efforts of National Fireproofing Contractors Association to have language added to the IBC that addresses this issue. 703.2.1 Tested assemblies. A fire-resistance rating of building elements, components or assemblies shall be determined by the test procedures set forth in ASTM E119 or UL 263 using loaded horizontal building elements and assemblies meeting the minimum size requirements in the standard. Too often products tested in accordance with a "modified" ASTM E119 or UL 263 fire test are being submitted and approved as code compliant, yet don't comply with the code or the standard. A "modification" to the fire-test to remove the load and using a small sample size results in passing fire tests at less thickness, causing a safety risk.

Thankfully there were no injuries reported and we 100% agree that sprinklers are needed in parking garages. We also believe that consideration should be given to requiring passive fire protection on the concrete. We hear lots of arguments against this in "that concrete doesn't burn" but not all concrete is the same ~ there are thousands of concrete mix designs and ultimately it always come down to money. PFP such as MONOKOTE fire protection Z-146T in this situation wouldn't have prevented the fire but it would have limited the damage to the concrete, allowed for faster repair while lessening the likelihood of collapse. #YieldProductionTrust Blake Mueller Rick Mihevc Bill McHugh John Dunk Thierry PERNOT
