NSC Distinguished Service to Safety Award is the most prestigious award given to individuals by the National Safety Council. Since 1942, the award recognizes outstanding service and contributions to the field of safety. Candidates must have had a sustained impact on the safety movement at the local, national or international level that resulted in increased injury prevention. Peer-led safety training can be a game-changer. When workers hear safety tips from someone who understands the job firsthand, the message often hits closer to home. But how can we ensure these sessions are as impactful as possible? Here are five tips to set your peer trainers up for success: 1️⃣ Choose the Right Peer Leaders: Select individuals who are respected, approachable, and knowledgeable. Credibility and trust go a long way in making the message resonate. 2️⃣ Provide Proper Training: Equip your peer trainers with the tools they need—whether it’s public speaking tips, training materials, or a quick workshop on how to lead effectively. 3️⃣ Focus on Real-World Scenarios: Peer trainers can draw from their own experiences to share relatable examples of risks and safe practices, making the training more practical and engaging. 4️⃣ Encourage Interaction: Foster open dialogue by creating space for questions, feedback, and group discussions. Workers are more likely to engage when they feel heard. 5️⃣ Recognize Their Efforts: Celebrate your peer leaders’ contributions. Recognition not only motivates them but also reinforces a culture where safety is everyone’s responsibility.
