Implanted BCIs that restore movement and speech face a major blocker to clinical adoption: 𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝-𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. (Video) At the NeuraSeed BCI Expo 2024, a neurosurgeon asked panelists from top BCI startups whether they partner with software vendors that smooth out the decoded behavior and pair it to, say, an exoskeleton. Both Rob Franklin's and Craig Mermel's responses indicate uncertainty about the specifics of what the BCIs will control. Yet they point to fine control of one's own body, which is clinically much further away than decoding those fine movements.
