Although removing the hereditary peers from the Lords is a good first step, this reform does not go nearly far enough to restore trust and clean up politics. Yesterday the UK Parliament debated a new Bill on the House of Lords but we’re calling on the government to deliver on its manifesto promise of a proper consultation on its future, including via a representative citizens' assembly, to let the country decide who should be holding politicians to account. 📢 We think the codes of conduct that exist in Parliament should be put on a statutory footing so that they can be enforced. Trust in politics and democracy is eroded if people feel that our elected representatives are not being held to account for wrongdoing. The Ministerial Code of Conduct should be put on a statutory footing so it can be enforced. This will help rebuild trust between our elected representatives and the public and clean up politics.
