In the European sand belt, agricultural soils face significant challenges including droughts and acidification, exacerbated by climate change. These issues have profound implications for current agricultural practices and future sustainability. To address these challenges, Rijkswaterstaat and Provincie Gelderland are collaborating on the LIFE CO2SAND project. This initiative aims to mitigate soil degradation by strategically applying a thin layer of clay to increase the lutum content in sandy soils to 8%. The project's objective is to treat 700 hectares of agricultural land by 2027, effectively enhancing soil resilience and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. How do they plan on doing this? On 16 August 2024, European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) were again released into the Rhine. The Rhine Connects partners, Sportvisserij Nederland and ARK Rewilding Nederland, together with the World Wildlife Fund (Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL)), are conducting research into the reintroduction of the sturgeon. This enormous fish species, which can grow over 3 metres long and weigh 150 kg, was officially declared extinct in the Netherlands in 1953. Due to overfishing, intensive shipping, the laying of canals and pollution, the sturgeon could no longer navigate between the river and the sea. If the sturgeon can find its way again, it will positively impact both the sturgeon and the life of other fish in the Rhine. Since 2023, the sturgeon programme has been part of the Interreg programme DRV (De Rijn Verbindt / Der Rhein Verbindet). Read more about the research via: https://lnkd.in/geCFeVi4

Europe faces an era with multiple crises (e.g. climate change and biodiversity crises, wars) and there is an urgency to stick to the green, digital transformative change of the blue sector and EU interdependence. Therefore, EU member states join forces to stimulate impact-oriented research and innovation under the Horizon Europe programme. The vision of the partnership is: ✅By 2030: boost the transformation towards a climate-neutral, sustainable, productive and competitive blue economy; ✅By 2050: create and support the conditions for healthy oceans and seas for the people. Under the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, six co-funded calls are launched that will fund projects focused on providing knowledge and activating collaborations around the sustainable blue economy. The partnership seeks to engage stakeholders across ocean industry sectors, policy, scientific disciplines, and civil society. 🌍 Exciting developments from the EU Horizon 2020 project STARS4WATER! 🌍 STARS4WATER (Supporting sTakeholders for Adaptive, Resilient and Sustainable WATER Management) is tackling one of the greatest challenges of our time: managing climate change and evolving land and water use in national and international river basins. This innovative project is enhancing foundational knowledge for the managers and users of water systems across seven European river basins, including the Rhine. In close collaboration with stakeholders, the project identified key needs and developed socio-hydrological scenarios for each basin, using international climate scenarios from the IPCC and socio-economic scenarios at both the EU and river basin levels. 🌊💡 Rijkswaterstaat is proud to be a partner in this project, leading stakeholder engagement and ensuring that this critical knowledge and collaboration will be applied in follow-up projects for the Rhine and the Meuse. It might seem contradictory to fell trees when we in the Netherlands are constantly hearing that we need to be more sustainable and greener. And yet, sometimes it really is necessary. If the tree is diseased, for instance, or has been damaged by a storm or forms a danger to road safety. So when we really have to cut trees down, we try to do this as responsibly as possible for flora and fauna alike. 🌳Robert Maarschalkerweerd, senior consultant on the living and working environment, green space and sustainability, explains more here >> https://lnkd.in/ef7XaTpF #rijkswaterstaat #tree #felling #sustainability Photo: © John van Helvert

In May, a challenging operation to lift the 6 mega pumps for the new pumping station in the Afsluitdijk at Den Oever began. Each pump is almost 12 metres tall with a diameter of 4.60 metres, weighing in at 90 tonnes. A challenging operation, because of the limited space available on the Afsluitdijk and the sheer scale of the pumps. Do you want to read more about this process at one of the largest pumping stations in Europe? Read more here >> https://lnkd.in/dxitk2am #rijkswaterstaat #water #afsluitdijk
