The news that Ørsted has dropped its FlagshipONE project is a blow to e-fuels. This should be a wake up call that an e-fuels market can only flourish with regulation ensuring that the most sustainable fuels are mandated. Part of that could be government support, such as an industry-funded revenue support mechanism that ensures stable returns to investors and e-fuel producers. 🛩 Imported or not, bio-SAF alone cannot decarbonise aviation. 🟢 The only truly sustainable way to decarbonise aviation is e-fuels. Instead of boosting local biofuel supply, the EU must concentrate on driving e-fuel production and supporting its uptake.

🛩 Imported or not, bio-SAF alone cannot decarbonise aviation. While SAF production subject to robust EU certification is better than imports that may permit fuels based on palm oil rather than used oils, ultimately bio-SAF will only get us so far in decarbonising the aviation industry. 🟢 The only truly sustainable path to decarbonising aviation is e-fuels. 🛫 Remember Virgin Atlantic’s "100% SAF flight" last year? The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has upheld complaints that their claim to use "100% sustainable aviation fuel" gave a misleading impression. According to Green Air News, the ASA said people who heard Virgin’s ad on the radio would understand the term “100% SAF” to mean the fuel used was “100 sustainable”. Our Director Aoife O'Leary says: ""SAF" or so-called "Sustainable" Aviation Fuel is a term that covers multiple fuels, many of which are not actually sustainable. This can be incredibly confusing to consumers and it’s good to see that the ASA recognises this. The alternative fuels with the greatest emissions reduction potential are green hydrogen and green hydrogen-derived, and if airlines want to claim to be 100% sustainable, it’s these fuels that must be prioritised.”

🎉 Congratulations to Sustainable Aviation for appointing its first CEO Duncan McCourt. This coalition is already doing lots of great work in the UK aviation sector's journey towards net zero, so we’re excited to see what they can achieve with Duncan on board! “I’m excited to be starting today as the new CEO of Sustainable Aviation. The industry has already made significant progress on the journey to Net Zero, but there is a long way further to go,” said Duncan. “The industry and Government are committed to going the distance on this and I look forward to playing my part in bringing the two together, along with other stakeholders, to deliver a genuinely sustainable future for aviation.”

🙏 We massively appreciate our panelists Dominic Weeks, bartek gurba, Oscar Felix Goovaerts Fjellstad and Franklin Streichenberger for taking part in our webinar yesterday for leading the exciting discussions on green hydrogen's role in decarbonising aviation and shipping for European skies and seas. The brilliant panel covered lots of ground in only an hour and gave us plenty to think about, but here are our five key takeaways 👇👇 1️⃣ Now that many innovative green hydrogen companies have been established with the crucial help of the EU’s Hydrogen Bank and the Innovation Fund, we need a policy shift towards more ambitious targets to create a new market in which these technologies can compete with conventional fossil fuels. 2️⃣ In the run up to 2030, EU policy should focus on incentivising investment in the critical infrastructure needed to support the development away from fossil fuels. 3️⃣ The biggest technological challenge to scaling up green hydrogen for use directly in these sectors is the volume requirements which can be difficult for aircraft and vessels.      4️⃣ Both shipping and aviation should electrify what they can , and with green hydrogen being the next best viable option, it’s crucial that green hydrogen and its derivatives go to the industries which need it the most, and where it will be most efficient. 5️⃣ Our panellists mentioned the importance of not just research and development, but also demonstration to showcase green hydrogen technologies and enhance both investor and consumer confidence. 📺 Luckily it's not too late to watch this great discussion back!
