The UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate advances thought leadership in the field of real estate by generating influential research, educating the next generation of leaders, and providing meaningful forums for industry professionals and policymakers. Through our various activities and programs, we employ a multidisciplinary and global approach to addressing the most critical real estate issues facing our society today and in the future. The Center's network is an ever-widening circle of leaders in the field of real estate, and we are uniquely positioned to facilitate connectivity among industry, academia, and policy. With a community of scholars drawn from departments across UCLA, including management, economics, law, public policy, urban planning, public health, geography, engineering, and architecture, the Center fosters dialogue about the most important local and global policy issues of our time. Whether the focus is on capital markets, urban issues, sustainability, or transportation, our activities are on the leading edge. At the Ziman Center, we believe in supporting our surrounding community by teaching sound business practices and social entrepreneurship initiatives. We are committed to creating more resilient urban neighborhoods and producing strong industry and civic leaders who possess unwavering ethical values around affordable housing finance and development in California, transit-oriented community development, permanent supportive housing, health and housing, and green building. Real estate is an all-encompassing field that extends beyond the buildings of our daily lives, affecting also our economy, our government, our environment, and transportation. Housing affordability is a major pain point for families across the US—and elected officials have noticed. An emerging favorite strategy among state & local govts: legalize ADUs. CA’s decade-long efforts offer some lessons for the rest of the country. 1) Legalizing ADUs is just the 1st step towards more diverse & abundant housing. 2) Keep chipping away at ALL layers of anti-development policies. 3) Housing subsidies & zoning reforms are complementary tools to support low-income households.
