The studio's garnished in suitably spooky spirit right now, welcoming staff with half buried skeletons, big ol' spiders, Sea of Thieves spook Belle and, gird yourself, SEASONAL VEG! Don't look at us like that, it's the squash. Can't trust veg that shares its name with a verb.

    • A large spider eyeballs you from a web constructed outside the main entrance to the Rare Ltd. studio. Its legs are orange, which is nature for "wrong 'un".
    • A ghostly-looking pirate hanging onto a buoy holding up a torch. Both the torch and buoy itself are lit with blue flame. Someone's stuck an inflatable eyeball and cobwebs in it as well, which doesn't quite match the aesthetic of the model but it's a good fit so you do you, decorator person.
    • A variety of Autumnal veg in a wicker basket and surrounded by yellow and orange leaves, which doesn't seem hygienic to us but it does look appropriate for October. Put this out in July and you'd probably get questioned.
    • The head, hands and legs of a skeleton are positioned on the grass leading up to the Rare studio in a way that must be quite uncomfortable for the poor fella. Around him are many small gravestones that are presumably for some undiscovered knee-high race of creatures based on their size.

Every story starts with an idea. With an expansive story like World of Warcraft: The War Within, it’s actually thousands of ideas. To visualize those ideas, Blizzard Entertainment has a team of talented artists working to create concept art.    According to Associate Art Director Tina Wang, the team had to dig deep to figure out what Azeroth underground looks like.   “When we first started building, we knew we had a unique challenge ahead of us in creating an expansion that takes place mostly underground, with distinctive cultures that explore the nature of being within the depths of Azeroth herself.   We started with early visual development, to explore the range of what "underground" meant. How do we bring that breath of fresh air and light to the player as they delve into the planet? What does it mean to be an Earthen, a culture of people made of rock and crystal? How do we show and fulfill the fantasy of the Nerubian empire at the height of their civilization? This initial exploration put together the vision of what the expansion as a whole may look like.   After that, the development team moved into production, and artists of all disciplines collaborated to expand upon these ideas. From creatures, characters, and rewards, to zones, dungeons, raids, and delves—plus all the animations and FX that bring them to life, the team crafted an incredible world for players to explore.”   Here is a peek at some of the eye-popping concept art that helped inspire this saga.    Click here to play The War Within: xbx.lv/4hqKR6U

“You learn and you have fun. You won’t even notice that you’re becoming so good at coding.” In the Battle of the Burroughs competition, the New York City Department of Education created a non-violent esports contest using Minecraft Education that focused on creativity and problem solving. In the competition, students received a prompt and had to solve a city-wide challenge. It’s part of a larger initiative to leverage the power of Minecraft Education to help students learn coding and build STEM skills while practicing teamwork and developing conflict resolution skills. With free lesson plans, schools can set up their own esports programs to help students develop teamwork, build empathy, and work on conflict resolution skills.
