Xiaomi to unveil its first "made in India" handset today; will it be the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime?
Xiaomi's Hugo Barra is ready to introduce the first Xiaomi handset made in India
Today, Chinese phone manufacturer Xiaomi will unveil the first Xiaomi branded smartphone to be assembled completely in India. The media event will take place in the city of Vizag inside the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The chief minister of the state, N. Chandrababu Naidu, is expected to make the announcement. While the actual handset model is unknown, it could be the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime. That handset was leaked by Indian online retailer Flipkart on Saturday, priced at the equivalent of $104 USD.
To counter some negative press about the lack of after-purchase care that Xiaomi buyers are said to suffer in the country, the company announced a pick-up and drop-off service for those in certain areas of India, whose Xiaomi phones need to visit the factory for a little R & R & R (rest, relaxation and repair).
Monday is a big day for Xiaomi's continued charmed existence in India. The phone is being produced under the "Make in India, Made in Andhra Pradesh" program, and Xiaomi's Hugo Barra will be making a speech about the company's journey in India (which has only been one year, as we pointed out). We should have some feedback about the event later today. Check in often!
Thanks for the tip!
