Samsung is doing a notch display? Patent reveals what the Infinity-U is

Ah, "The Notch" — the hot topic of 2018. It's a controversial design decision ever since Apple put one on its $999 iPhone X last year. If you are fuzzy on what it is we call the Notch — it's the cutout at the top of a phone's display, which houses the front-facing camera and sensors. Its presence eats into the screen, spoiling a perfect rectangular shape and irritating a good portion of smartphone fans in the process.

In 2018, Samsung was one of the very few manufacturers to say "no" to the Notch trend. The Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9 both have a bit of a chin and a bit of a forehead, but their displays are perfect rectangles. The same can't be said for LG's top-tier phones, nor even Google's Pixel 3 XL, and fans praised Sammy for sticking to its guns. Both for staying away from the notch and for keeping a 3.5 mm headphone jack on its phones.

However, it seems that 2019 is the year that the Darkness overtakes even Samsung. OK, let's say it in a less dramatic tone — for one, there are plenty of leads letting us know that the Galaxy S10 will be coming without a headphone jack. And the Infinity-U display just popped up on a patent granted by the USPTO, sporting a nonapologetic U-shaped notch at the top.



This is not the first time we see this. Back in October, a Samsung patent for in-display fingerprint scanner tech also depicted a device with the same type of notch. So, the company has been at it for a while!

It's a design patent that shows us an unknown future Samsung device. The illustrations show us a dual-curved screen at the front, so it'll be a top-tier Sammy phone, with no bezels at the sides and minimal top and bottom ones. And, at the top there, we see a cutout for the selfie camera, just hanging out in all its notchy glory. Could this be the rumored Samsung M20? Or another midranger?

Other interesting things to note:

• The device is drawn to have a headphone jack
• The Samsung signature elliptical home button seems to be on or underneath the display
• The earpiece grille seems to suggest a more powerful speaker — probably a stereo setup with a bottom-firing speaker.
• There's only one camera at the back, so it's definitely not a Galaxy S10+.
