Addiction Therapists in Rockwood, ON
Change, whether chosen or imposed, can be one of the most challenging of life's gifts. Working as a Therapist in the addiction and mental health field for 25 years has allowed me the privilege of working with individuals who, like me, face some difficulties that are seemingly too complex to work out on their own. Finding the right person to explore such sensitive and personal issues is no easy feat which is why providing an authentic and judgement-free space is at the heart of my therapy practice. I am accepting new clients for in-person and online therapy! Please visit my website for more information.

I work from a trauma-informed and mindfulness-based perspective, with a compassionate and gentle approach to trauma, addiction, grief, and relationship issues.
We all carry multiple stories about our selves, our lives, and our experiences. There are parts in our stories that are sometimes hidden from our awareness. It is in the calm noticing, re-discovery, and re-telling of our stories that we can find and connect with parts of ourselves that may need healing, and also parts of ourselves that are insightful, strong, and brilliant even in the midst of hardship and darkness. Through facilitating, witnessing, and holding space together, we can engage in our personal work of healing. I look forward to connecting with you.

I know how exhausting it feels when life becomes too much to bear. You wake up each day feeling the weight of your past, the constant anxiety, the grief, the trauma, and sometimes wonder, “Is this it? Will I ever feel okay again?” Whether you’re carrying the heavy burden of PTSD, you’re a First Responder who’s seen too much, or you’re battling anger, addiction, perfectionism, or struggling in your relationships—it’s overwhelming. Some days, you might even question if your presence here matters at all. But I want you to know this: it absolutely does, and you don’t have to go through this alone. I’m here to help.

As a clinician specializing in self-esteem, anxiety, grief, and substance use I am here to tell you that you don't have to navigate these paths alone.
You’ve been stuck in a cycle that’s hard to explain to others. The anxiety is relentless, like a constant hum in the background that never lets you fully relax. You feel like no matter what you do, you’re never enough. It’s like there’s a wall between you and the life you wish you could live—the one where you’re confident and able to connect deeply with others. You find yourself holding back from opportunities, feeling trapped by your own thoughts, and watching from the sidelines as life keeps moving forward. It’s exhausting and lonely, and you’re wondering if anyone truly understands just how hard this is.

One million Canadian men suffer from major depressive disorder each year. Three of every four completed suicides in Canada are by men. The prevalence of alcohol use disorder is twice as high in men with another mental health diagnosis than in the general population. One third of Canadian men worry that talking about mental health at work could put their job at risk. Men are just as likely as women to have mental health issues yet are far less likely to utilize traditional mental health services. Men are more likely to believe that mental health services are difficult to access, ineffective and invasive. At Cogent, Ontario’s new mental health clinic focussed solely on supporting men, we’re changing that.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
