I see individuals for a wide number of needs. I generally see clients above the age of 18. People come to counselling because they want changes in their lives and are unsure how to make those changes. Often they are stuck in stories or habits of the past , or traumas have locked them into unhelpful ways of being. People use therapy to achieve those goals and then move on.

We all have times in life when we suffer and feel daunted by the challenges ahead or what has happened in the past. You might be feeling depressed, anxious, lonely, grieving or experiencing relationship issues. Painful feelings, thoughts and behaviours may be troubling you. I understand that life is a journey, and at times it can be difficult to work out the way forward without the right help.

If you have been feeling lonely, sad or anxious, we can share a safe space where you can tell me your concerns. The main purpose of therapy is generating deep awareness of one's own personality and behaviour, understand about your inner world (thoughts, emotions, feelings), inquiring how our past affects our present. With this understanding one can move onto learning skills in order to manage emotions and behaviour. The therapeutic approach I use depends on the client's needs and resources available, with a strong foundation on a trauma-informed approach.

It is a problem with the hu man sleep system.
You have trouble sleeping. You're tired (mind the pun) of lying awake at night tossing & turning. The thought of going to bed makes you worry. You don't drop off when you put your head on your pillow. If you do, you wake up during the night and can't get back to sleep for hours. You worry about the toll your sleeplessness is having on your health, your mood, your relationships and your ability to function at work. You want to sleep better. You want to look forward to bedtime. You want to wake up feeling refreshed. You want to feel like sleep isn't controlling your life. I was born in South Africa but have lived in New Zealand most of my life. I have had many life experiences such as volunteering in the NZ Fire Service (11 years) and travelling and volunteering in Africa. My passion for counselling grew as I spent time with people in my various experiences and travels, and discovered my desire for better skills to more effectively listen and help people navigate through their shared life experiences with me. I consider it a deep privilege to share a welcoming, safe, and honoring space with a person who chooses to share their footsteps with me. I am also a faith based counselling service (Christian).

I use the IFS approach, which proposes that hu mans are made up of many different parts.
Men's Issues. Addictions and compulsions. Substance abuse, pornography, excessive anger. I like working with men ready to confront destructive self-defeating behaviors, who are challenged by addiction and other mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, anti-social behavior, anger, and PTSD. A person will respond emotionally once the mind gives meaning to the stimulus. I explain the reaction sequence and how it leads to the authorizing thought. This perpetuates the pattern of damaging behaviour.

Therapy is a specialized conversation, which is both a science and an art. It creates a deep relational connection and a safe space, where we can heal, grow stronger, or just move forward. We do this by discovering who we are, what we want, and how to get there. I am passionate about meeting people, journeying with them, facilitating change, and watching as they become more at ease within themself, with others, their world, and spirituality.

I can offer a multi-level psychological approach to managing unhelpful life patterns that draws from some of the strongest evidence based theories.
I enjoy working with clients who have challenges in their lives, are open to new approaches to managing those, and are motivated to work towards achieving change. Clients don't need to have all the answers but it is important that they are motivated to work together with me to find solutions. I enjoy working with clients who are open to exploring patterns in their thinking and behaviour, and who value the process of self growth. I particularly enjoy working with professionals and people who are able to attain achievements in their lives, but notice unhelpful life patterns which interfere with their goals or values.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
