Do you feel a loss of meaning, pain from a difficult past, or feelings of anxiety and overwhelm? Are you struggling with relationship conflict or renegotiation? When people have experienced complex trauma—whether it is oppression, child abuse, painful relationships, or the struggle of being alive—they often lose trust in themselves and others. Therapy is an opportunity to rebuild trust, redefine your sense of self, choose your values, shift your relationship to the past, create a life of meaning, and build relationship safety. I specialize in working with the LGBTQ, neurodivergent/autistic/ADHD, poly, and kink communities.

I have worked with a wide range of clients over the course of my career. Many of my clients want to overcome their anxiety, obsessions, compulsions, and fears. I enjoy finding creative ways to challenge these problems. Together, we can gain further awareness of the problem, explore it, and work toward solutions. Clients that I like to work with tend to be looking for a more value-driven life. They want to overcome their fears by facing the challenge. When the work is done, they can look back at what they have accomplished like looking down from the peak after a long hike.

Hi, I’m Luis, and I’m glad you’re here and that you’re on the journey to figure out what works for you. I am a licensed social worker who wants to help you achieve the best version of yourself. I hold great value in being honest and transparent with my clients and supporting people through their personal transitions. Strong, healthy relationships are the foundation for an emotionally healthy life. Unfortunately, there may be brokenness within our romantic, familial, and spiritual relationships that can affect all areas of our lives. Our experiences of the past may haunt us in the present, affect our current relationships, and dim our confidence for the future.

We are living in a very challenging time. Many of us are struggling with everyday issues and concerns of life. We attempt to manage and cope with the reality of a changing world, maintaining healthy relationships with immediate family, loved ones & friends. We are focused on positioning ourselves to meet our basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing. Combing this with the reality of being diagnosed with a Mental Health Disorder, fighting the disease of substance abuse, or attempting to confront our past traumatic childhood and adult trauma, a healthy therapeutic relationship is critical at this time for individual clients.

The Rosemary Tree is a place where healing happens differently. Our clients experience healing and wellness in a holistic, team-based approach that is felt differently as soon as you walk into the space. We provide a space to experience this deeper kind of healing by combining clinical excellence, experiential therapy, relationship approaches, and engagement with nature.

Focusing on peak performance and maximizing functioning leads to happiness, feeling content, and reduced negative self-impressions. Regardless of whether your performing in athletics, the arts, medicine, or human interaction, it is important to recognize both what is working to optimize performance (building consistency) and what is holding you back (mitigating challenges and overcoming difficulties). Focusing on the core competencies of self-awareness (knowing what is going on in your mind and performance) and self-management (how to take control of your true potential through mindset, behavior, and engagement) goals are realized.

I provide LGBTQ+ affirming therapy and help people self-explore, navigate relationships, and find supports in the community. Often we spend so much time avoiding what makes us uncomfortable or scared that we miss out on the fullness of life. I want to help if you are feeling stuck, struggling with avoidance, or feeling disconnected from your values to build skills of flexibility and mindfulness. I want to work with you to reconnect with your values, set meaningful goals, and embrace the full range of human experience (positive and negative).

I love to work with individuals who are willing to grow and be open to the idea of adaptability and change. I would love for them to want to learn more about who they are as a person, and understand why they may do certain things. Through that insight, I hope for them to use what is learned in order to better improve their overall well-being. Maintaining a willingness to learn will always be beneficial for an individual and their journey.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
