You struggle in your relationship, or your doctor handed you a terrible diagnosis. Maybe there is something important you need to talk about, but you don't know who you can trust. On some days, it may feel your mind is spiraling out of control. Getting out of bed may have become so much more difficult lately. You experience dread too much of the time. You feel alone and sometimes wonder "what is the point?" You can't seem to get around to doing what needs to get done. People are constantly on your case. You seem to be your own worst enemy. You don't want your friends or partner to know this one bad thing about you.

Psychotherapy is simply a conversation designed to help you understand yourself more completely. Rather than providing answers, it helps you identify what is interfering with your ability to live in a satisfying way. I have helped people sufferring from depression, anxiety, and relationship problems - even when previous attempts at treatment have failed. Meaningful change is possible in an environment of mutual respect and safety, where you can tell your own story at your own pace. I work with both individuals and couples.

Therapy is a relationship that requires a foundational connection in order to be effective.
As a licensed therapist, I believe my role is to be a tool for change and support as you walk your own path. I operate from the assumption that you are the expert of your own life, and I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship. I bring unconditional warmth and empathy to sessions while also helping clients determine their own negative beliefs or patterns that may be contributing to feelings of distress. With increased awareness and insight, together we can work on letting go of fear, resentment, healing past wounds, expressing needs and boundaries, and building healthy relationships.

Some people find themselves feeling stuck with certain thoughts and feelings. Others find themselves repeating behaviors that lead to unproductive and problematic situations in their life. Therapy is a process where these concerns can be discussed and worked through from a nonjudgmental standpoint. My therapeutic approach is to assist you in reaching your personal or relationship goals with more effective ways of being. The adolescents and adults I work with are understood as individuals that have their own unique attitudes, beliefs, and experiences.

While we are capable of managing a lot, sometimes we may feel too sad, too scared, too tired, or too lonely. This can make having a relationship, family, school, work, or just living that much more overwhelming. Life is also full of surprises and you might be going through changes that feel too daunting or even devastating. You might have struggled for a long time or just recently. Despite your best effort, you still feel quite stuck, helpless, confused, or frustrated. You might even know what you need or want to do differently, but not so sure about where or how to start. This is a great start and I am so glad we found each other.

My approach is collaborative, rooted in the belief that a strong therapeutic relationship is the foundation for effective therapy.
I see the best in others, and want to help you see this in yourself too! When we can wholeheartedly accept ourselves, and honestly and compassionately explore what's working and what's not, and what we truly value in life, then we can create meaningful change. Whether paralyzed by anxiety, sadness, past experiences, or beliefs that you aren't good enough, or are feeling unfulfilled, stuck, or overwhelmed by life stress, I can help. Together, we can work towards feeling more confident, capable, at ease, and connected.Colorado clients with UHC, Oxford, & Oscar insurance schedule here:https://headway.co/providers/abby-peterfeso

I love working with families. I have worked in the mental health field for almost 20 years in a variety of settings. I have found my passion in working with young children and their families with a special love for children with significant behavioral issues. My goal is to work with care givers to help support them in parenting and understanding the child's behavior through a different lens. I use directive and non directive play therapy interventions, sand tray and other relationship based interventions to support my client's goals.

I am an empathetic, down-to-earth person who has gone through many experiences being a single mother, divorcee, business owner, teacher, musician, relationship partner, and adventurer of life.
I believe everyone has a story or many stories that they believe about themselves. Some of these stories may or may not serve people in their lives -but all have a powerful effect on how we walk in the world. Using integrative, cognitive-behavioral, and narrative therapy, I help clients redefine their beliefs about themselves, or how other people or situations affect their lives. I guide clients to recreate the stories that can help them initiate change, and reinforce the stories that already give them strength and clarity.

Whether you are entering therapy with a clear vision of what you are looking for or are more uncertain of your goals, I will work with you to come up with strategies for growth and the development of optimal emotional health and functioning. I believe that healing occurs through the process of building a trusting therapeutic relationship. By creating a safe and confidential environment I will help you to better understand patterns (which are often outside of your awareness) that lead to emotional distress. Recognition of these patterns empowers you to make choices that can lead to life long change.

It is most important to me to show up as a human being and to build a trusting relationship with you.
Your chronic stress and trauma are getting in the way of experiencing life. The coping tools that you have used in the past are no longer effective. Prioritizing yourself feels challenging. We will explore how your past experiences influence your ongoing and current challenges. We will process past trauma and chronic stress, build insight to manage current day stressors, and strengthen your toolbox so that you feel ready to handle future stress and experience fulfillment in life. I supplement my talk therapy work using Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), which targets symptoms from a bottom up approach and provides quick relief.

As a therapist, I lead with empathy and validation and look to develop a strong, trusting relationship with clients upon first meeting. When we dig into the work, I aim to offer insight and gentle encouragement in the face of your stressors, traumas, and triggers. Together, we'll explore your past, present, and future, uncover patterns, and reorient you toward your own goals. I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults who are struggling with things related to anxiety, ADHD, grief and loss, relationships, pregnancy and postpartum periods, transitions, schooling, interpersonal communication, and self-exploration.

I've helped many clients work through difficult challenges they're facing and would like to help you too. I have a very straight forward, assertive and somewhat irreverent communication style. We work hard, bravely dig as deep as we need to and have some belly laughs along the way. My clients appreciate how real and raw it can get, they feel free to share the good, bad and the ugly. If you're ready to be a good student I am a good teacher = Let's roll up our sleeves?!

If you are reading this, you're probably experiencing significant pain. Perhaps you're facing a break-up, or you realize your new partner is very much like the previous one. You may be scared, uncertain of the next step. Perhaps you are single, asking what it might take to find the right partner, or you may feel stuck in your marriage. You'll come in, plop yourself down, and ask me to fix you. I'll say: "I cannot do that." "All right," you say, "then, what is the point?" I'll respond: "I can help you be curious."

My overall philosophy as a counseling psychologist is that although therapy can be hard work, it should also be easy to get into, easy to get out of, and easy to return to when needed. I am a generalist with a focus on working with women, LGBTQ individuals and couples, developing professionals, and clinicians. My approach to psychotherapy is collaborative, and I incorporate a variety of treatment methods as appropriate, including process-experiential, narrative, and solution-focused strategies. I strive to create an environment where people feel supported and challenged to explore fears, discover strengths, and achieve goals.

Relationship Issues Therapists
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
