As a counselor, my goal is to provide a nonjudgmental, trauma-informed space to process complex emotions while also challenging old patterns of behavior that are no longer serving my clients. My approach to therapy is collaborative. Together we can uncover strengths, foster coping tools to improve daily functioning and quality of life. I am a psychodynamic, attachment-based therapist, which means we will explore past experiences including messages about self, others, and the world and how they can be hindering current patterns and overall well-being.

Too often we give our power away to letting a thought, a circumstance or interaction rob us of our peace. Have you even felt that your life is just "the way things are?" Although it is true we cannot always control external forces, we are capable of controlling how we respond to them which is a simple concept to grasp but takes intentionality to implement. The good news is the best version of yourself is already within you and as you learn to observe your experience without judgement, you will have the ability to offer greater acceptance and compassion for yourself and to others to create a ripple effect of positive change.

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist dedicated to providing compassionate and supportive counseling/psychotherapy. I work with individuals both long and short term. Wanting to understand why adverse or difficult things happen to us is natural. When one can contribute a sense of meaning to a difficult situation the power of the problem is often integrated and diminishes. Therapy is a process that can help an individual find the transformational quality in their adverse experiences and become empowered, instead of overwhelmed by them.

Are you looking for support? Welcome! I would love to hear from you. I can work with you to help improve your relationship with yourself (and those around you) by truly getting to know all of you - yes, even the parts of you that scare or embarrass you. Together we can work toward a more integrated whole, where you can exist with yourself in more harmony. The results are less shame and self-criticism, more self-compassion, more manageable moods and behaviors, and less reliance on patterns that aren't working for you any longer. I also work with adult sibling pairs who are struggling with their connection and/or conflict.

I think of counseling as a journey. Maybe you're not sure what the next steps are to get where you want to go. Perhaps you are feeling a lost, stuck, or unsure of what peak to journey to next. Maybe you've lost reception completely and need help syncing GPS to even find where you are! That's where I come in. As a therapist, I see my role as journeying alongside you on your unique path of self-exploration. I have a backpack of supplies and tools for us to get there but ultimately, it is your journey that we will be on.

My vision of successful therapy is that you feel at home in yourself and maintain that center as you engage with the world around you. You will experience more ease, compassion, connection, balance, expansiveness, and a clarity about who you are and where you stand in relation to the experiences that brought you to therapy to begin with. Your issues may include not feeling like yourself, feeling stuck, grieving a loss, feeling flat, numb, or disconnected, sensing that something is missing or off, struggling with identity or life transitions, being in need of support in parenting, or just sensing that this is important somehow.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
