We each carry within us our unique wisdom, strength and resiliency that, with the right support, can become to the keys to our personal healing. Yet we all go through periods where life circumstances- traumas, life transitions, or relationship difficulties- overwhelm our ability to make sense of our experiences. Perhaps your reactions don't make rational sense to you or your loved ones. Maybe old coping strategies no longer cut it anymore. It can be confusing, terrifying and lonely to not be able to make sense of the storm happening inside of us. It can also be a turning point, a moment to expand into a deeper version of ourselves.

What would it be like to wake up in the morning and be excited about the day? To have hope? To experience more than just relief, but real joy?

Our lives often present unavoidable situations that trigger emotions we're not always prepared to handle. Sometimes, we may not fully understand the root of our distress, only that we’re experiencing pain. We often delay addressing this pain until it starts negatively impacting our lives. Many of us weren't taught how to process complex emotions or the accompanying psychic pain. When someone finally decides, "I've had enough," and reaches out for help, they're taking a crucial step toward moving away from pain and toward a sense of freedom. The looking for freedom from pain is who I am here to serve.

Change in our lives is inevitable. The transition periods between times of stability in our lives are more common then we often care to admit. These transitions can trigger stress, anxiety, depression and other current and long standing psychological issues. I started my clinical practice in 1989 in Austin, Texas and specialize in helping adult individuals and couples who are experiencing transitions due to significant changes occurring in their lives.

Therapy shouldn't have to be complicated - it's really about sitting down and talking with another person. What is most crucial - perhaps even more important than credentials and education - is that you feel comfortable with your therapist; otherwise, the therapy won't work.
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist (in Texas and California) as well as a certified alcohol and drug counselor. I have been in practice since 1994 and work with individuals, couples, families, and adolescents.

I am a relationally-focused clinician dedicated to helping others reach their full potential. I offer a safe space for anyone to share whatever they need and be whatever they need to be. Sometimes life robs us of our light. It can happen gradually or suddenly. We might not even know why the light is gone, only that it’s not there anymore. My goal is to enable you to search for and take hold of that light. I work primarily with depression and anxiety as well as spirituality, processing trauma, and family dynamics. I specialize in adolescents and young adults transitioning into new life stages, and adults of all ages who feel stuck in life.

My practice combines elements of acceptance and commitment therapy, narrative therapy, ecotherapy, and stoic and existential philosophy, among others, and leans heavily into the dynamic and ever-emerging collaborative relationship between client and therapist, drawing on principles of interpersonal neurobiology and theories of attachment. My work is trauma-informed and grounded in meaning-making and the identification and practice of values: ways in which we can live more vitally, authentically, and in a manner that is in accordance with who we envision ourselves to be.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
