Karnataka Election Results 2024 Highlights: NDA retains Karnataka even as Congress makes a comeback; Prajwal Revanna defeated in Hassan

The BJP has won decisively in Karnataka. The party has won 19 of the 28 seats in the State, while the JD(S), its alliance partner, won 2 seats. The Congress, the ruling party in the State, has made a comeback -- it won 9 seats.The BJP has a vote share of over 46% and the JD(S) has 5.6% voter share, while the Congress has a vote share of 45.43%. In a big boost to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, the party wisn all five seats in Kalyana Karnataka. It is a massive win for the grand old party as all the party candidates, including Mr. Kharge himself, lost to BJP candidates in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Read the report here.

The ruling Congress in Karnataka has improved its tally by winning nine seats while the BJP and JD(S) combine emerged victorious in 19 constituencies in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. 

Expelled BJP leader K.S. Eshwarappa forfeited his security deposit in Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency, where the party veteran B.S. Yediyurappa’s son B.Y. Raghavendra retained the seat by a margin of more than 2 lakh votes over Congress candidate Geetha Shivarajkumar.

Mr. Eshwarappa, a former Deputy Chief Minister who had also served as the BJP’s state unit president, secured 30,005 votes. Mr. Raghavendra secured 7,78,721 votes, while Ms. Geetha Shivarajkumar got 5,35,006 votes.

Mr. Eshwarappa rebelled against the party as his son K.E. Kantesh was denied a seat from neighbouring Haveri. He contested as an independent even after several top leaders tried to pacify him. Read the report here

The Congress is leading in Bellary, Bidar, Chamarajanagar, Chikkodi, Davanagere, Hassan, Koppal and Raichur.

Seven candidates of the BJP, including Captain Brijesh Chowta (Dakshina Kannada), Pralhad Joshi (Dharwad), Basavaraj Bommai (Haveri), B.Y.Raghavendra (Shimoga), V. Somanna (Tumkur), have won. The JD(S)’s H.D. Kumaraswamy (Mandya) and M. Mallesh Babu (Kolar) have won.The two parties are fighting the election together. 

The Congress’ Radhakrishna has won the Kalaburagi seat by 27,205 votes. The BJP’s Umesh. G. Jadhav has secured the second place. This is the party’s first win in this election in the State. 

Dr. Radhakrishna is the son-in-law of AICC president and senior Congress leader, Mallikarjun Kharge. 

M. Mallesh Babu of the JD(S) has won in Kolar. He defeated K.V. Gowtham of the Congress by 71,388 votes.

JD(S) State president H.D. Kumaraswamy has won the Mandya parliamentary seat. He defeated Venkataramane Gowda by 2,84,620 votes.

Janata Dal (S) president and former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy was ahead of his rivals after 18 rounds of counting in the prestigious battle for Mandya parliamentary seat in Karnataka.

Mr. Kumaraswamy had polled 8,21,172 votes while his nearest rival Venkataramane Gowda (alias ‘Star’ Chandru) of the Congress had polled 5,46,020 votes in the Vokkaliga heartland.

The BJP’s Govind Karjol has won from Chitradurga (SC) Lok Sabha seat. He is the former Minister in Karnataka and has held various portfolios including Irrigation, Public Works Department and Social Welfare. He has also served as the State’s Deputy Chief Minister from 2019 to 2021.

In Dakshina Kannada, Capt. Brijesh Chowta of the BJP is leading by over 1.3 lakh votes against Congress’ Padmaraj R Poojary. 

BJP party workers have already started celebrating in front of the counting center at NITK Surathkal in Mangaluru. 

Kota Srinivas Poojary, who is contesting in the Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha seat on the BJP’s ticket, is leading by over 2 lakh votes margin against Congress’ K. Jayaprakash Hegde

JD(S)‘ Prajwal Revanna, facing charges of rape and sexual abuse of many women, is trailing in the Hassan Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka. After 17 rounds of counting, Congress candidate Shreyas M. Patel is leading by over 42,000 votes.

Though the Lok Sabha election results will not have any bearing on the State government directly, trends indicate that Congress may not reach the double digit mark, which it was hoping to. The last time Congress reached double digits in Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka was in 1999. 

Congress has been trailing in Bengaluru Rural, the lone seat which the party had won in 2019 and from where D.K. Suresh, brother of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, is contesting against BJP nominee and cardiologist Dr. C.N. Manjunath. This is not a good sign for Mr. Shivakumar.

JD(S) is now leading in two seats, with rape-accused Prajwal Revanna trailing behind Shreyas Patel of the Congress. Of the three Bengaluru seats, Congress is leading in one (Central), while BJP is leading in Bengaluru North and Bengaluru South.

Of the three seats in Bengaluru, the NDA coalition is leading in 2 seats, with the INDIA coalition leading in 1 seat. The parties leading from these seats are: Bangalore North: BJP, Bangalore Central: INC, Bangalore South: BJP. 

In 2019, all the three seats were won by the BJP.

BJP candidate from Bengaluru South Tejasvi Surya soared past Sowmya Reddy of Congress by a wide margin of 2,07,581 votes, as of 12.10 p.m., according to ECI data. 

While Tejasvi Surya has got 4,23,710 votes so far, Sowmya is trailing behind with 2,16,129 votes.

NDA candidates leading by a margin of over 1 lakh votes in five seats in Karnataka: 

Vishweshwar Kageri (BJP) in Uttara Kannada - 1,60,296 vote margin 

Dr. CN Manjunath (BJP) in Bengaluru Rural - 1,17,879 vote margin

Tejasvi Surya (BJP) in Bengaluru South - 1,42,585 vote margin

HD Kumaraswmay (JDS) in Mandya - 1,65,864 vote margin

B.Y. Raghavendra (BJP) in Shivamogga - 1,05,927 vote margin

At 11 a.m., the BJP has registered a lead in 18 of 28 constituencies, Congress in 7, and JD(S) three seats, according to ECI data. 

Congress candidate from Bengaluru Central Mansoor Ali Khan surges ahead with a margin of over 23,000 votes. Incumbent MP P.C. Mohan trails with 1,37,279 votes. 

Since the turn of the millennium, the BJP has remained undefeated in all three seats across Bengaluru city. BJP has not lost Bengaluru North since 2004, Bengaluru Central since 2009, and mostly importantly, it has enjoyed an uninterrupted winning streak in Bengaluru South since 1991. 

H.D. Kumaraswamy leads by a huge margin of over one lakh votes against Congress opponent Venkataramane Gowda (Star Chandru) in Mandya constituency. 

Ahead of the counting of votes in the Lok Sabha elections, JD(S) leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy offered prayers at Gangadhareshwara temple in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

The JD(S) second-in-command, who contested from Mandya as an NDA candidate, also sought the blessings of the pontiff of the Adi Chunchanagiri Giri Shakha Math, Nirmalananda Natha Swami.

Later speaking to reporters, he exuded confidence on winning the election.

There was some confusion in the counting centre in Vijayapura when an officer on counting duty forgot to bring his keys to the strong room. 

When he tried to open the strong room, M.R. Sharif, Vijayapura city corporation commissioner, realised that he had forgotten the keys at home. He rushed back to his house and brought them. Counting was thus delayed by a few minutes. 

Counting in Belagavi, Chikkodi, Vijayapura and Bagalkot began at around 7 a.m. with officials beginning to sort out postal ballots. 

In Belagavi and Chikkodi, the first round of EVM counting was completed by around 9 am. 

Mallesh Babu of the Janata Dal (Secular) in the lead against K.V. Gowtham of the Congress in Kolar. The margin of votes is 27,593. 

Kolar is one of the three seats being contested by the JD(S) as part of its pre-poll alliance with the BJP.

BJP’s Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri leads against Congress’ Anjali Nimbalkar in Uttara Kannada seat by a margin of over 25,000 seats. 

Kageri was the 22nd speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly, while representing the Sirsi constituency. He lost the 2023 Assembly elections from Sirsi. 

Anjali Nimbalkar is an INC spokesperson who represented the Khanapur constituency in the 15th Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 2018-2023. She is a practising gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon.

BJP leads in 7 constituencies, Congress and JD(S) in 2 seats each in Karnataka, as per early emerging trends 

BJP’s Dr. C.N. Manjunath leads against D.K. Suresh of the Congress in Bengaluru Rural constituency by a margin on over 6,000 votes. 

Bengaluru Rural was the sole Parliamentary seat won by Congress in the 2019 LS elections. 

Early trends show BJP candidate from Chickballapur Dr. K Sudhakar leading by a margin of 1,651 votes against Raksha Ramaiah of the Congress. 

Counting of votes polled in Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka has begun. The process began with the counting of postal ballots at 8 a.m.

The Congress in ​Karnataka​, which banked on implementation of five guarantees in the ​Lok Sabha elections​, will get single-digit seats, according to several exit polls.

The exit poll conducted by India Today-Axis My India, TV Bharatvarsh-Polstart, India TV-CNX, Jan Ki Baat, Republic TV-P MARQ, ABP News-C Voter and India News-D-Dynamics predicted 20-plus seats for the BJP-Janata Dal (S) alliance.

TV Bharatvarsh-Polstart predicted the highest number of eight seats to the Congress, while ABP News-C Voter and India Today-Axis My India gave 3 to 5 seats for the Congress.

Going by this, compared to 2019 results, the Congress would improve significantly but would fall below the expectations of party leaders and the cadre.

As the countdown for the counting of votes begins, all arrangements have been made by respective district administrations in the districts of Kalyana Karnataka and Kittur Karnataka for counting of votes polled in the Lok Sabha elections.

Two former Chief Ministers, namely Jagadish Shettar and Basavaraj Bommai, are testing their fortunes in the Lok Sabha elections for the first time, while Union Minister Pralhad Joshi is hoping for a fifth win in a row.

Several of the Ministers in the Congress government in Karnataka from the region are anxious as their wards and relatives are in the fray.
