Odisha Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 highlights: BJP maintains leads in 19 of 21 seats

The main competition for Odisha’s Lok Sabha seats is expected to be between the regional party BJD and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance

The BJP won 19 seats in Odisha and was leading on one seat, Aska, while the Congress won Koraput parliamentary constituency. Polling in the State of Odisha for the 21 Lok Sabha constituencies took place in the fourth to seventh phases of the Lok Sabha election, on May 13, May 20, May 25 and June 1. The total voter turnout was 75.68% in phase four, 73.50% in phase five, 74.45% in phase six and 70.67% in phase seven. 

The State also witnessed its State Assembly election simultaneously where the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian National Congress (INC) have locked horns.

The main competition for Odisha’s Lok Sabha seats is expected to be between the regional party BJD and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Also fielding their candidates in all 21 constituencies is the INC-led Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). INDIA has fielded 20 INC candidates, along with 1 candidate representing the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

    Jual Oram leads by 77,749 votes in Odisha’s Sundergarh seat

    Former Union Minister and sitting MP Jual Oram of BJP was leading by 77,749 votes over his nearest rival and former Indian Hockey captain Dilip Tirkey of BJD, according to ECI.

    While Oram secured 2,69,571 votes, Tirkey bagged 1,91822 votes at 1.28 pm.

    Congress candidate Janadran Dehury secured only 1,46,533 votes.

    BJP’s Baijayant Panda leads in Kendrapara

    BJP national vice-president Baijayant Panda was leading in the Kendrapara Lok Sabha constituency in Odisha by 13,714 votes, according to the Election Commission.

    Anshusman Mohanty of the BJD was at the second spot, while Congress candidate Siddharth Swarup Dash was in the third position.

Patra has been a prominent spokesperson for the BJP, a regular on TV debates over the years. In 2019, Mr. Patra lost the seat by less than 12,000 votes to the BJD’s Pinaki Misra. Despite not being a local, the party has given him another opportunity to contest.

    Besides Jajpur and Kandhamal, where BJD is leading, the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in 17 of the 21 Lok Sabha seats from Odisha. Congress is leading from the remaining two seats of Kandhamal and Koraput.

    Ahead of the counting day, the Opposition-led INDIA bloc on Sunday had asked the poll body to issue directions to Returning Officers to ensure that postal ballots are counted and their results declared before the outcome of the EVMs is announced. In a letter to the ECI, the Opposition leaders highlighted that the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 states that the Returning Officer has to begin the process of counting postal ballots first. However, they claimed that this statutory practice was repealed and given a “go-by” by the poll body despite its 2019 guidelines to this effect.

    The seat falls in the BJP stronghold of western Odisha where the party has a wide acceptance that is largely attributed to the presence of organisations affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

    Voting for the 21 Lok Sabha seats took place simultaneously along with the Odisha Assembly elections in four phases. 

    While the BJD occupies the most number of seats at 12, its rival the BJP is also catching up with eight seats in its kitty, while the Congress party has just one seat with itself.
