The Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) was officially launched today at an event officiated by Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, marking a pivotal moment in #Ethiopia’s economic development. Established by Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and with support from #FSDAfrica and FSD Ethiopia, the new exchange will be a vital platform for raising capital, trading securities, and driving economic transformation. This milestone follows significant economic reforms over the past year, including floating the birr, opening the banking sector to foreign competition and advancing capital market development. By providing equitable access to capital and enhancing liquidity, essential for driving private sector growth, the #ESX will help spur development in what is already one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. The new exchange includes a state-of-the-art Electronic Trading Platform which is already improving credit flow in the banking system with trades exceeding 𝗘𝗧𝗕 𝟭𝟯𝟱 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗨𝗦𝗗 𝟭.𝟭 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻) conducted since its pilot in October 2024. By enhancing price transparency and reducing transaction costs, the platform is improving credit accessibility for businesses and will also support more efficient issuance and trading of financial instruments such as Treasury Bills, corporate bonds and commercial papers.
