Genghis Capital’s KSh 355 mn Debt Row Intensifies as CMA Jumps in The Capital Markets Authority- Kenya (CMA) has asked Genghis Capital Ltd to provide a repayment roadmap after the investment firm was caught up in a US$2.7mn debt row with a South African businessman. The creditor, Auswell Mashaba, has tasked Moran Auctioneers to seize office assets belonging to Genghis Capital over US$2.7 million in unpaid debt. The investment firm’s efforts to stop the auction met dead ends on Monday when the High Court declined to certify Genghis’ application as urgent saying the court did not find it appropriate to certify it as such. Genghis Capital reportedly took a US$2.3 loan in January 2017 to be repaid at 7.25% interest which the SA businessman later sought a ruling for a total repayment of US$3.1 million at 7.25% until paid in full. “In line with its investor protection mandate, the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) is engaging Genghis Capital Limited to get a roadmap on how the firm intends to address the outstanding debt owed to its stakeholder,” CMA said in a statement. Proud Partners of the Africa Financial Inclusion Forum We’re excited to collaborate with the Africa Financial Inclusion Forum, a platform dedicated to addressing the critical challenge of financial exclusion in Africa. With only 43% of Sub-Saharan Africans having access to bank accounts, financial inclusion is key to reducing poverty, inequality, and driving economic growth across the continent. Let’s work together to build a more inclusive Africa. #FinancialInclusion #AfricaGrowth #FintechInnovation #SustainableDevelopment
Overview of the Summit & Expo Financial inclusion remains a critical challenge in Africa with current estimates showing only about 43% of people have access to bank accounts in Sub Saharan Africa. Financial exclusion contributes immensely to poverty and inequality and by extension leads to low levels of economic growth. For instance, although South Africa’s financial inclusion is estimated at about 69% (access), but a significant percentage only use the account to receive a salary or grant and do not have access to other financial services. Mobile technology penetration and innovative Fintech solutions have helped to accelerate deepening of financial inclusion but the cost of most financial services remains a barrier and therefore a lot still needs to be done to provide financial services to low income, marginalised and mostly rural communities. Financial inclusion can play a catalytic role in reducing poverty and inequality and accelerate the achievement of other sustainable development goals on the continent. Financial Inclusion has been identified as an accelerator and enabler of economic growth and a critical solution in the achievement of Sustainable Development goals. The Africa Financial Inclusion Forum endeavors to advance and promote financial inclusion in Africa through innovation, disruptive technologies, policy interventions and cutting-edge Fintech technologies and services.
