The African Leadership Institute offers the Archbishop Tutu Fellowship Programme
About us
The African Leadership Institute is building a critical mass of visionary, strategic, self-aware and ethical leaders across the continent, who together become the catalysts for change and transformation of Africa. It is dedicated to identifying, nurturing and equipping Africa’s future leaders with experiences, insights, and tools so that African-led solutions are developed to address Africa’s challenges. The Institute provides a platform for a diverse network of young African leaders to network, and engage in peer-to-peer learning and cross-border collaborations. Working with a select group of partners, leading academics and accomplished global leaders, AFLI facilitates opportunities for young leaders to create a new Africa. The African Leadership Institute (AFLI) was founded in 2003 by African-born Rhodes Scholar Peter Wilson and Sean Lance, a renowned international business leader. The two recognised that in order to achieve the most impact in Africa, developing the next generation of leaders should be the highest priority. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, renowned for his part in the struggle for freedom against apartheid in South Africa, a Nobel Peace Prize Winner, and chairing the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, is the patron of AFLI.

For our Jo'burg Fellows and those who follow the African Leadership Institute and would like to meet Linda Kasonde, she will host a book signing at Exclusive Books Rosebank Mall on Saturday 19 October 2024. Linda is a lawyer, civil rights activist and founder of LCK Chambers - her law firm in Zambia. She is also the former Executive Director of Chapter One Foundation : an organisation that promotes and protects human rights, human rights defenders, constitutionalism, the rule of law and social justice. She is the first person to have been elected as the Vice President of Africa for the Commonwealth Lawyers Association. Last year, Linda launched her memoir titled 'Women, Resilience, and the Will to Lead', which tells the story of her journey into leadership, from her upbringing as a child, to a chance encounter with a classmate who made her realise that just putting oneself forward was half the battle in becoming a leader. This story is intertwined with political events in Zambia between 2011 and 2021, and reveals the role that Linda has played in restoring Zambia’s democracy. I am thrilled to share my transformative experience attending the Tutu Fellowship. This journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with profound learning, meaningful connections, and personal growth. Throughout the fellowship, I had the privilege of engaging with a diverse group of leaders from across the continent, each bringing unique perspectives and insights. The program’s emphasis on ethical leadership, social justice, and community impact resonated deeply with me, reinforcing my commitment to driving positive change. Mont Fleur was a particularly memorable part of the journey. The serene environment provided the perfect backdrop for deep reflection and insightful discussions. The collaborative exercises and strategic simulations we participated in were both challenging and enlightening, offering new perspectives on leadership and problem-solving. Another highlight was our time at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. The sessions there were incredibly enriching, with distinguished faculty providing invaluable knowledge and practical understanding. The interactive dialogues and experiential learning opportunities helped us to hone our leadership skills and apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. Moreover, the fellowship fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and collaboration among us fellows. The bonds we formed will undoubtedly continue to inspire and support us in our respective journeys. I am immensely grateful to the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship for this enriching experience and look forward to applying the lessons learned to make a meaningful impact in my community and beyond. This September started with back to school for me. I was at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford for an entire week learning, discovering and sharing with peers and experts all for the development of our continent as part of the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship . For me the depth of the problems we are looking to resolve in our respective African countries requires competences and toolkits and for that we need to study, innovate and apt new strategies and methodologies. It was exciting to be once again learning from one of the best institution in the world at University of Oxford that has been around for over 900 years. How are we building our institutions to sustain time and people? I am glad to be back and apply these new concepts to my work in economic development in in Africa and I am so grateful for this opportunity. To everyone I wish to encourage you to never stop learning and honing your skillsets as it’s increasingly important in an ever-evolving world. Here are 3 ways I continue learn about new things: 1️⃣ Books / reading articles online 2️⃣ Meeting and discussing with experts in various fields 3️⃣ School / development programs etc. Tell me below what are some topics you are currently learning more about 👇🏾!

Following worldwide celebrations of the International Day of Democracy on 15 September 2024, 2014 #ArchbishopTutuFellow, Linda Kasonde, writes on the state of democracy in her home country, Zambia. The title of her piece is 'Democracy works in Zambia - If we fix it'. A lawyer and founder of a law firm, civil rights activist and the first Zambian to be elected as Vice President of Africa for the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, Linda reflects on what she refers to as "anti-democratic trends", which she says have spanned a decade leading up to Zambia's general elections in 2021. In an emphatic clarion call, she proffers collaborative actions that could renew and sustain Zambia's democracy. I am proud to say that I am officially an Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship! To say this was an incredibly, life changing experience is a bold but true statement! Know Thy Self, these 3 words have cropped up numerous times throughout the course of the Fellowship which started in April of this year. I have come out of this programme not only with astounding insights and a network that is beyond measure but also reflections that I will carry with me as I continue on my Leadership journey of self and of others: - There is a place for leaders like me, a leadership style that leans into vulnerability. - Learn to sit with things that make you feel a little discomfort because the greatest learnings come from the places that are least explored. - For me leadership does not mean denying my motherhood but allowing by children to be part of my story and journey. - Be aware of the energy you walk into a room with because it is contagious. - Know your intention when you enter a space and deliver it with the conviction and vigour. - A fellow brother Brian Waswani Odhiambo said, “we are living our ancestors’ wildest dreams” so I am asking myself am I fully living my purpose. - As a leader but also as a human being it is important to protect your psychological safety, not everyone deserves to hear your story and that’s okay. - Don’t let the “mind traps” dictate the outcome before you have given the situation a fair chance to play out. - As a leader surrounded by a team of experts how do you harness the strength the individuals to drive towards a common goal while all at the same time being decisive in your actions and the path you set out. -Being a leader for me means to understand when I need to step up and when I need to step back and trust in the expertise around me. - In situations that are highly pressurised, resourced constrained, clouded by rules that may not make sense at the time, how do you show up? What is your default position and why? - Lastly I passionately believe I am worthy and through my life I will continue to ask, how do I work to bring that light out in others. This achievement is not mine alone, it’s through the sacrifices of my amazing parents, my wonderful and strong sister, my friends and colleagues, my greatest cheerleader and supporter Lahendra Adari and my amazing girls. C.D. Glin thank you for the nomination for a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of this Fellowship.
