Jarred Sullivan, CFA, CQF, our Global Multi-Asset Investment Strategist, reflects on October’s global market performance. US PPI and CPI surprised to the upside. Whereas inflation in the UK, Eurozone, and China surprised to the downside compared to market expectations. The global economic data show that the US has been a lot more resilient than other markets around the world. With the US going to the polls tomorrow (5 November), polling data indicates that Trump has more than 60% odds of winning the elections, as he is ahead in five of the key swing states. It is going to be interesting to see who wins the election as this will certainly shape the way for asset markets over the next five years. Patrice Rassou, our CIO, chatted to eNCA about market developments. He spoke about the concerns around China and that they would not follow through on policies to reignite their economic growth. They are expected to fall short of their 5% target. This impacted resources shares linked to China, with the JSE down 0.5%. On a positive note, smaller and mid-cap shares were up. They also briefly chatted around expectations ahead of the US elections next month. A Trump victory could lead to tariff increases, which would have a detrimental impact on South African exports and the rest of the emerging markets. The ECB is also expected to cut rates this week.
