A collaboration in astronomy began in 2016 between South Africa's University of KwaZulu-Natal and China's top astronomy institution, NAOC. This partnership has trained nearly 20 students and researchers. Professor Ma from UKZN recognized shared research interests and complementary technical advancements between the institutions. He played a key role in initiating the collaboration. The collaboration was formally launched in October 2016 with a workshop on "Cosmology with Large Surveys" funded by the National Research Foundation of South Africa.
