About us
The Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST) is an internationally recogised research, training, and learning centre housed within the Faculty of Economics and Science Management at Stellenbosch University. The Centre brings together research on the complex dynamics of sustainability transitions and transformations which is achieved through education and training, research, and engagements which focuses on five key research themes - knowledge co-production, social-ecological resilience, transformative futures thinking, finance and resource flows, and political economy and development - that informs pressing national, continental, and global sustainability development challenges. The CST is a vibrant hub for leading scientists and students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and fosters collaborations and partnerships with a variety of local and international universities. Our teaching and learning approach emphasises knowledge co-production, enabling the CST to bridge the gap between science, policy, and practice. By promoting collaboration, we foster an integrated and impactful approach to research and sustainable development. The Centre offers three postgraduate training programmes: Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Sustainable Development (NQF level 8), Master of Philosophy in Sustainable Development (NQF level 9) and PhD in Sustainable Development (NQF level 10).

Congratulations to Manon Perrot-Baar, one of our PGDip in Sustainable Development students currently completing her postgraduate qualification at the Centre for Sustainability Transitions, for being awarded Stellenbosch University's Rector's Award for Excellent Achievement. This is an amazing achievement and testament to your hard work, determination and commitment. Congratulations!
Currently completing my Post graduate Diploma in Sustainable Development at the University of Stellenbosch with the Center for Sustainable Transitions (CST). I am aspiring to be a sustainability consultant.
I am deeply honored to have received the Rector's Award of Excellence at Stellenbosch University on the 25th, an experience that has left me reflecting on the journey I’ve been on. The event was a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination required to create meaningful change. Seeing so many people come together—dreamers, doers, and difference-makers—reinforced the idea that we are not just imagining a better future, but actively working towards it. Throughout my postgraduate studies in Sustainable Development, I’ve faced many challenges, and each one has taught me something new about the complexities of the world we are trying to improve. There are always different ways to approach a problem, and with every obstacle, there is an opportunity to learn and grow. The evening reminded me that real change comes from engaging with communities, listening closely, and committing to the work—no matter how difficult the path may be. This recognition isn’t just a celebration of what I’ve achieved, but a reflection of the collective effort to strive for something better. It fuels my passion to keep pushing forward, learning from the past, and continuously seeking new ways to contribute to a more sustainable and just world.
