We need urgent action to reduce fatalities on our roads caused by heavy and binge drinking. Research indicates that 50% of people who die on the roads have a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit. During Transport Month, we must address this urgent issue. Despite only a third of the population drinking, binge drinking is widespread, making our roads deadly and costing South Africa billions annually. The World Health Organization advocates for five solutions to reducing alcohol harms. By adopting these recommendations, South Africa's roads can become more safe for drivers and pedestrians. Learn more about how we can implement WHO's five Best Buys here: https://loom.ly/49khS7c By acting now, we can save lives and reduce the burden on our economy. #TransportMonth #RoadSafety #AlcoholHarms #DGMT

There are roughly 21 million children in South Africa – that’s more than a third of our population. But their needs, preferences and opinions are often far from view. Instead, the voices of politicians and adults who make decisions on children’s behalf tend to take up the most space in national conversations. This is about to change… Children have a right to express their views and be involved in decisions that affect them. This is why Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), DGMT and other partner organisations have created a platform for children to get involved in shaping national priorities that will improve the lives of all children. Now, children are showing us what it really means to put children first with the “Hold My Hand” campaign launching soon! Follow Hold My Hand to find out more! #ChildrenFirst #DGMT #HoldMyHand

‘Nothing about us, without us’ was the clear call from children at a two-day consultative forum convened by government in Boksburg this week. The event was attended by child rights advocates, DGMT and other civil society organisations who are all getting behind a shared set of national priorities to accelerate action for children. These priorities are part of government’s draft National Strategy to Accelerate Action for Children (NSAAC). If we as a nation mobilise around these priorities, we can ensure that every child has enough food, love, safety and cognitive stimulation to reach their full potential. Follow Hold My Hand for more information. Watch this space, more coming soon! #HoldMyHand #NSAAC #HMH

Organisations Across South Africa Are Working to Improve Nutrition Access in Communities That Need It Most. Masiphumelele Creative Hub is Leading the Way! 🌱 This Nutrition Week, we’re shining a light on Masiphumelele Creative Hub and their remarkable efforts to make healthy food more accessible in the Masiphumelele community. Through their Nourished Child programme, they’re transforming how children in ECD centres, primary schools, and local cooking kitchens access nutritious meals. The aim is clear: replace unhealthy food practices with meals that support the growth, development, and well-being of every child in the community. 🥦🍎 Their impact doesn’t end there. Their Garden Champions initiative empowers families to grow their own food by teaching them how to make the most of small spaces—creating door-sized vegetable beds right at home. Fresh produce from these community gardens is already being harvested for healthy meals in their kitchen, ensuring that everyone benefits from local, nutritious food sources. 🥬🌽 Understanding the impact of nutrition, supported by programmes like these, is vital in getting South Africans closer to #eatingrightforabetterlife. Do you or your organisation work in improving access to nutrition for young children and their communities? Let us know who you are and what you do in the comments! 🌍💚 #NutritionWeek #MasiphumeleleCreativeHub #DGMT #NationalNutritionWeek
