The Energy Council welcomes the passing of the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill by Parliament of the Republic. This follows the adoption of the Bill by the NCOP on the 16 May 2024. The Bill will accelerate South Africa’s shift towards a modernised and low-carbon energy system, which is in line with our global peers. This has been a priority action under the Energy Action Plan. The ERA Bill will now be sent to the President for assent.

How EXACTLY do you join in on Energy Wheeling? 🤓👨🏾💼📑 1. The generator must be compliant with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa(NERSA) with its connection to the grid 2. The generator needs to be connected to an Eskom grid. 3. The generator shall pay use of system charges for energy exported under the Generator Distribution Use of System (Gen DUOS) or Generator Transmission Use of System (Gen TUOS) tariff approved by NERSA. 4. Generators may nominate multiple buyers but Eskom may reserve the right to limit the number. 5. The buyer receives the energy exported by the generator (also known as "the wheeled energy"), which is credited to their account based on the generator's nomination and consolidated at the conclusion of each time of use period.

Who can participate in Energy Wheeling? 👩💻👨🏭🏗 All customers have access to the grid for the delivery or export of electricity thanks to the Electricity Regulation Act and the Transmission Grid Code and Distribution Network Code of NERSA.  However, third-party wheeling of electricity is limited to buyers connected on medium-voltage or higher-voltage networks and on a time-of-use tariff. Generators must be licensed or registered to generate and supply electricity, and the government has raised the threshold for private self- or distributed generation power plants. Generators must apply to Eskom for grid connection, pay for a cost estimate letter, and sign an amendment agreement to their Electricity Supply Agreement. Buyers can be another Eskom customer, a municipality, or a customer within a municipal network.

What is Energy Wheeling exactly? 🤔 Here are a few examples Energy Wheeling ⚡️🔋 Wheeling is the process of using an existing distribution or transmission network to transfer energy from an energy generator like a Solar or Wind farm to an end customer who is located in a different location. 🙌 This could be a mine, a mall or any other private off taker. 🏗️🏪🏡 Additionally, this might happen over a number of distinct distribution networks, like Eskom’s network through to a municipality’s. As a result, energy—that comes from an independent power producer—is wheeled to each and every client with a power purchase agreement. 🔌⚡️ In the City of Cape Town as of September 2023 wheeling has burgeoned. Growthpoint Properties became the 1st party to wheel renewable energy. Solar power from Growthpoint’s Constantia Village shopping centre was successfully injected into the city’s energy grid. This was all done by collaborating with Etana Energy, a licensed Solar Power Producer. 🏪⚙️⚡️ Yet, this is only the beginning. Throughout the country, from Mpumalanga, KwaZulu Natal to the Northern Cape over 100 renewable energy projects have been established for Solar and Wind Schemes. Private entities have taken the opportunity to alleviate loadshedding into their own hands. 🏗️🎛️👷🏾♀️ #RenewableEnergy #ClimateChange #Sustainability #Renewables #Nature #GoGreen #Sustainable #EcoFriendly #Energy #Environment #SolarEnergy #SolarPower #Solar #solarfarm #GreenEnergy #CleanEnergy #Wind #WindPower #WindEnergy #WindFarm #SaveThePlanet

How to End Loadshedding with Green Energy ⚡️🔋  ️Wheeling is the process of using an existing distribution or transmission network to transfer energy from an energy generator like a Solar or Wind farm to an end customer who is located in a different location. 🙌 This could be a mine, a mall or any other private off taker whose locations may be less conducive to renewable energy production. 🏗️🏪🏡 Wheeling also provides a mechanism for utilities to recover the cost of maintaining the electricity network and administrative functions through the generator use of system charges. In South Africa, Eskom has approved third-party wheeling since 2008 for the physical export of energy onto the national grid by Independent Power Producers (IPPs). 🔌⚡️📑 T️he recent amendment to South Africa's Electricity Regulation Act has placed renewed focus on wheeling as a scalable solution for renewable energy uptake and liberalizing the electricity market. 🏗️🎛️👷🏾♀️ In future posts we will highlight successful examples of this initiative while emphasizing the benefits of the Energy wheeling frameworks. Wheeling is unlocking the potential for significant private sector investment in renewable energy generation by removing geographical location-based limits. Yet this is only the beginning 100s of projects across the country are getting involved. Follow us and stay in the know. 🏪⚙️⚡️
