Explain it however you want; consumers never welcome price increases. With every price increase, households have less to spend on food, medicine and other essentials. South Africans are used to inflation, but it still hurts. Now, the country is set to increase its value-added tax (VAT) rate in two stages over the next year. The first increase will raise VAT from 15% to 15.5%, effective 1 May 2025, followed by a second increase to 16% on 1 April 2026. In addition, South African consumers will see an increase in electricity tariffs following the National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (NERSA) approval of Eskom’s Financial Year (FY) 2026 tariff adjustments. But be warned: The new tariffs, which take effect in April and July 2025, will impact direct Eskom customers and municipalities differently. And don't forget to add on the VAT increase! From 1 April 2025, Eskom direct customers will experience a 12.74% increase in their electricity tariffs. Municipalities purchasing bulk electricity from Eskom will see an 11.32% increase from 1 July 2025. The approved changes aim to create a more structured and equitable electricity pricing model while ensuring cost recovery and the responsible integration of alternative energy sources. (This means solar power and the like are driving up the cost to you, the consumer.) *Key Adjustments to Tariffs* The approved changes bring significant structural modifications to electricity pricing. - Residential Customers: The inclining block tariff (IBT) structure is removed, meaning all electricity consumption will now be charged at a single rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh), regardless of usage levels. - Municipal Tariffs: The previous 10 municipal tariff categories are consolidated into three simplified structures: Municflex (large power users), Municrate (small power users), and Public Lighting. - Solar Energy Users: Households with registered rooftop solar systems can export excess energy into the grid, earning energy credits under the Homeflex tariff. - Service Charges: Charges will now be applied per point of delivery rather than per account, ensuring fair cost distribution, particularly for large municipal, industrial, and mining consumers. - Time-of-Use Adjustments: Time-of-use tariffs have been realigned to better reflect the needs of industries, mining, and commerce. These changes remove one party from subsidising another and introduce simplification to the tariffs. It's unbundling the system to provide a clear breakdown of electricity expenses. It affords the utility (and municipalities) a more secure income base to maintain and expand the electricity supply network. While we don't like price increases, we do need electricity to power the nation and our economic lifeblood. 💡 ℹ️ Follow me for more nuggets of power, energy and water information.
