The latest review of South Africa’s private sector action on realising the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reveals many innovative solutions to the challenges the SDGs hope to address, says our Executive Director Dr. Achieng Ojwang. Speaking in Sandton, Johannesburg, yesterday, at the review launch Ojwang said collaboration between the public and private sectors, government, academia, and civil society was critical to achieving the SDGs. The launch of the Private Sector Voluntary National Review (VNR) marks a significant milestone, showcasing how over 100 companies are innovating to address challenges like poverty, inequality, and climate change. This report contributes to the country's second voluntary national review (VNR), which will be presented at the UN High-Level Political Forum in 2025. Dr Ojwang stressed that despite progress, global efforts to achieve the SDGs are lagging, with only 17% of targets on track. The Private Sector VNR reveals that businesses are increasingly prioritising SDGs such as decent work and economic growth (SDG 8) and climate action (SDG 13), showing a strong commitment to integrating sustainable practices into their core strategies. The GCNSA is committed to engaging with the business sector to enhance its impact and drive progress. As South Africa aims to lead in the quest for a sustainable future, the collaborative efforts showcased in this report are a testament to the power of partnerships in achieving the SDGs.
