Kenya’s leading digital credit provider Tala has joined the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. The company was welcomed to the global network during a certificate handover ceremony, marking a significant step in its commitment to responsible and ethical business practices. #Tala now joins over 24,000 companies worldwide that have aligned their strategies and operations with the #TenPrinciples of the United Nations Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. Welcoming Tala to the initiative, Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) Executive Director Judy Njino commended the company for its leadership in financial inclusion and ethical business. She highlighted the vital role that fintech and financial institutions play in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) by using technology to expand access to financial services. Tala’s General Manager, Mumbi Annstella, expressed pride in Tala becoming the first digital credit provider in Kenya to join the UN Global Compact. She reaffirmed the company’s commitment to democratizing access to credit for the global majority, particularly for MSMEs and women, further strengthening global financial inclusion efforts. As a UN Global Compact participant, Tala will benefit from various programs, including training sessions on corporate sustainability, access to the UN Global Compact Academy and library in addition to networking opportunities with businesses worldwide. Kenya Bixa Limited, a participant of the United Nations Global Compact since 2013 and a leading producer of natural annatto products, has unveiled its inaugural sustainability report. This milestone highlights Kenya Bixa’s commitment to sustainability, positioning it among the leaders in responsible business practices in Kenya. The Kwale based agro-processing company is a major exporter to foreign markets and with increasing demands from global regulations such as the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD), the report provides detailed insights into the company’s governance, environmental practices, and social impact, including its contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) Speaking at the launch, Global Compact Network Kenya Executive Director Judy Njino applauded Kenya Bixa for the bold step, noting that the report reflects the company’s clear vision, deep understanding of global challenges and commitment to being part of the solution to pressing societal issues. She further noted that in the face of multiple global crises such as climate change, biodiversity loss and human rights concerns, sustainability is transitioning from voluntary to mandatory. Companies that embrace this change will therefore lead the way in innovation, growth and resilience. On behalf of the Kenya Bixa Board, Hon John Safari Mumba emphasized that the sustainability report underscores the company’s unwavering commitment to transforming lives through sustainable and innovative products while embedding transparency and accountability into its operations. As the year draws to a close, we were delighted to officially host Global Compact Network Kenya Board members, partners and friends to an evening of celebration as we welcomed them to our newly opened office at Principal Place. Led by our Board Chair Martin Ochien'g and Executive Director Judy Njino, this special evening marked an important milestone for the Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) in Kenya since its launch in the country back in 2005. This move marks a new chapter in our journey, symbolizing growth, independence, and renewed commitment to advancing the United Nations Global Compact Principles and the #SDGs in Kenya's Private Sector. We were honored by the presence of our former host Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) represented by the A.g CEO Tobias Alando, MML, Bsc. and former KAM CEO Phyllis Wakiaga, who provided critical administrative support to the Network secretariat for several years.   We were privileged to also have Stefan Engels, formerly with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), whose presence reminded us of our humble beginnings. It was through UNDP that Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) was first proposed in 2005 with additional support from leading business coalitions Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) and Federation of Kenya Employers. Starting out with 5 signatories, our participant base now stands at over 300, a testament to the growth of the responsible business movement in Kenya. Joined by our Board members Abdi Mohamed-CEO & MD Absa Bank Kenya and Sheila Masinde-Executive Director, at Transparency International Kenya, our sister network UN Global Compact Network UK, the event also provided an opportunity to reflect on 2024, a year filled with significant achievements, including expanding partnerships, strengthening private-sector engagement, and driving impact across Kenya. With many Kenyan businesses struggling to keep pace with emerging Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) requirements, Global Compact Network Kenya, in partnership with Danish Industry, hosted an ESG Roundtable to address critical capacity gaps and help local companies navigate the complex #ESG landscape. Under the theme Exploring Challenges and Opportunities for Kenyan Companies, the forum aimed to support companies in understanding compliance obligations, particularly in light of international sustainability demands. A report commissioned by Danish Industry, titled ESG in Emerging Markets, highlights the growing impact of EU sustainability regulations on Kenyan companies, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to help them meet sustainability demands. Speaking at the event, Stephen Kimenye, Program Manager at Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK), highlighted the pressing challenges Kenyan businesses face on the road to #ESG compliance. He pointed out that many local companies lack technical expertise in #ESG matters and face difficulties aligning local sustainability priorities with international standards. "This roundtable comes at an opportune time to foster stronger partnerships to support ESG compliance, build businesses' understanding of ESG principles and their relevance to Kenyan markets," Kimenye said. Enock Nyachae, DI East Africa Sustainability Project Manager, emphasized the risks posed by low awareness of ESG principles and the potential impacts of international regulations, such as the European Union's sustainability legislation. He called for increased efforts to raise awareness and understanding of ESG issues among Kenyan businesses, particularly regarding EU sustainability laws, to reduce missed business opportunities. The forum featured case study presentations from representatives of SASINI PLC, Haco Industries Kenya Limited, and Kapa Oil Refineries Limited., who shared insights on how they are navigating the ESG landscape.
