Transforming the built environment for people and planet to thrive.
About us
The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) is an independent, non-profit organisation, established in September 2007 to promote green building in South Africa’s commercial property industry. A green building is a building which is energy efficient, resource efficient and environmentally responsible- which incorporates design, construction and operational practices that significantly reduce or eliminate its negative impact on the environment and its occupants. Building green is an opportunity to use resources efficiently and address climate change while creating healthier and more productive environments for people to live and work in. The GBCSA is a full member of the World GBC (www.worldgbc.org). GBCSA Vision: To lead the transformation of the South African property industry to ensure that all buildings are designed, built and operated in an environmentally sustainable way to allow South Africans to work and live in healthy, efficient and productive environments. GBCSA Mission: To promote, encourage and facilitate green building in the South African property and construction industry through market-based solutions. The main functions of the GBCSA are to: 1. Promote and raise awareness of green building, 2. Establish a green building rating system for South Africa, 3. Provide green building education, and 4. Make knowledge and resources available to assist those that want to implement green building.

Sustainability isn’t a new idea—it’s deeply rooted in our heritage. In this month’s feature, we explore how traditional South African architecture has embodied green design for centuries. From the widely-used verandah to the Xhosa rondavel, to the traditional Cape Dutch homestead, our diverse heritage has a lot to teach us about how we can inspire a greener tomorrow. Preserving the past while looking ahead to the future: Sustainable buildings do not have to look or be, contemporary or modern. Retro-fitting a space that already exists, without disrupting the rich history it carries in its structure, is a project that some of our green teams are tackling with skill and flair. The Visual Arts Building at Stellenbosch University was built in 1905 and today hosts offices, lecture halls & workshops in a GLA of over 3700m2 over four floors. This building has achieved a 6-Star Green Star rating for Existing Building Performance, meaning it displays world leadership regarding the building’s sustainable operational performance. Design and operations were enhanced, focusing on energy efficiency and green transport, as part of a campus-wide upgrade to achieve green certifications. The building is over 100 years old and still stands today as a highly functional, flexible, and welcoming space for students, from media producers to jewellery makers and fine artists, to create, learn, and grow. Reduce. Decarbonise. Adapt. That is the message for this year’s World Green Building Week, which we celebrated across South Africa through various events this past week. Our Cape Town office doors were opened for the afternoon on Tuesday, and we invited members and special guests to join us for refreshments and discussion around the topic. We always enjoy hosting in our space, and the chance to connect and catch up in person. Thanks to all who joined and brought their “gees” - we had a ball! #BuildingTheTransition #WGBW24 #GBConnect

Is it possible for sustainable building practices to breathe new life into historic buildings? This #HeritageMonth we’re exploring how buildings can transition over time to serve new purposes and operate in new ways. It is possible to preserve rich cultural heritage while becoming greener, and more resilient. Peak Studios is an adapted and extended art deco building in Cape Town, originally built in 1938. Today it houses 500+ students in a highly efficient and vibrant environment. Its key features focus on energy, water savings, and material reuse. It also aims to set the standard for good, green buildings that the students who stay in it come to expect from their South African built environment, normalising efficient design and raising the bar of expectations of those just entering the property market.
