Is it possible for sustainable building practices to breathe new life into historic buildings? This #HeritageMonth we’re exploring how buildings can transition over time to serve new purposes and operate in new ways. It is possible to preserve rich cultural heritage while becoming greener, and more resilient. Peak Studios is an adapted and extended art deco building in Cape Town, originally built in 1938. Today it houses 500+ students in a highly efficient and vibrant environment. Its key features focus on energy, water savings, and material reuse. It also aims to set the standard for good, green buildings that the students who stay in it come to expect from their South African built environment, normalising efficient design and raising the bar of expectations of those just entering the property market. Transform Urban Spaces with Green Infrastructure At Ellenby, we proudly sponsored the recent Grounded symposium by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) WA, focusing on the critical role of green infrastructure in shaping sustainable, livable urban spaces. Why does this matter? As urban areas face climate challenges like heat, drought, and pest threats, greening efforts must extend beyond public spaces into private properties. Here's what we learned: Beyond Public Lands: With shrinking block sizes and increased urban tree loss, private and verge greening are crucial. Value Green Spaces: Tools like the Green Factor Tool can assess sustainability, while TAFE funding is crucial for developing skills in horticulture and arboriculture. Community Resilience: Transform spaces using Indigenous knowledge and connect with Noongar land. Greening is both a spatial and social solution. Innovative Solutions: Projects like Miyawaki forests and verge greening boost biodiversity and resilience. Sustainable Design: The My Home project in North Fremantle is a prime example of community-focused design addressing homelessness. [LD Total managed the installation of trees, we donated from Ellenby for this project.] Water-Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD): A holistic approach to WSUD and ecologically resilient landscapes is essential for lasting green infrastructure. Investing in green infrastructure today means a brighter, more sustainable future for our cities. Let's work together to create urban spaces that thrive with nature. Feel free to reach out to us at Ellenby Tree Farm for more insights on integrating green infrastructure into your projects. Towards a more sustainable and greener city is what the Brisbane Green Factor is looking to achieve for the city’s built environment and the latest recognition by the Queensland Goverment and this commendation received yesterday at the Minister’s Award for Urban Design supports the city’s mission. Well done to the team Jacqueline Paton Cassandra Sun Anita Chesterman for their contribution and leadership to the project. Thanks to the Goverment architect Leah Lang for her support on Brisbane’s Design Led City agenda and BCC for the continuous commitment to excellence in Design. What the jury said: Project: Brisbane Green Factor Team: Brisbane City Council As Brisbane markets itself on its green and clean credentials approaching the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, there will be a growing need to demonstrate how our city/region is meeting its goal of being a well-designed, subtropical city. Brisbane City Council is to be congratulated for developing the Brisbane Green Factor tool used to optimise landscape designs and maximise the ecosystem services they provide to the city. The key measurable ecosystem services of sense of place, stormwater management, habitat provision, food production, urban temperature regulation, health and wellbeing are designed to be baked into the development process. The demonstration of a high green factor score against a benchmarked score considered best practice creates a consistent and transparent methodology, which creates certainty for urban development participants. The jury sees the benefit of this exceptional tool for Brisbane and thinks a state-wide application could even be warranted to assist the development community to measure success when providing green infrastructure to support biodiversity, increase community amenity and resilience, and create a strong sense of identity for the citizens of Queensland. #sustainability #design #urbandesign #landscapearchitecture #brisbane

The rapid urbanisation sweeping across the globe is a profound transformation shaping the future of our planet and communities. As cities develop, it's important to think about all that comes with these cities - their design, energy, resources, and people - and their impact on the environment. As we speak to more multicultural communities, we're finding that many environmental issues impacting CALD communities can be linked to building design, city planning, and general infrastructure. As we watch cities flourish, we should also consider both built elements of urban design. and the services and resources we want to power our cities with, which includes integrating: 🌆 Green Solutions: Eco-friendly infrastructure and renewable energy to mitigate environmental impact both integrating solutions in cities and the surrounding wilderness, as well as long-term solutions to protect the Earth. 🤝 Equitable Development: Access to affordable, climate-safe solutions for all. This includes energy, housing, healthcare, and education for all communities. 🌿 Nature Integration: Incorporation of green spaces into urban design to promote biodiversity and well-being. 🌎 Collective Action: Collaboration across all sectors to build inclusive, resilient cities for future generations.
