Providing unconditional love and hope to all those impacted by HIV/AIDS...

About us

Founded over 30 years ago, the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) is dedicated to saving and transforming lives. As one of the first NGO’s in South Africa to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, HACT has established a reputation for making a significant and meaningful impact in the lives of those both infected and affected by the disease. HACT’s mission is to provide unconditional love and hope to all those impacted by HIV/AIDS. Collectively our projects directly impact the lives of over 10 000 people every year, the majority of whom are women, orphaned and vulnerable children and young people at risk. HACT adopts a holistic, family-centric and asset-based approach to tackling HIV/AIDS and strives at all times to deliver practical, sustainable and community-led projects which ultimately uplift and empower those we work for and alongside. HACT’s four key focus areas are: 1. Healthcare HACT provides comprehensive healthcare services to vulnerable individuals, families and communities which align with South Africa’s National Strategic Plan on HIV/AIDS, TB & STI’s including; HIV testing, TB & STI screening, home-based and inpatient care as well as adherence counselling. 2. Prevention & Education Focusing on children and young people at risk, HACT’s evidence-based education programmes are proven to reduce new HIV infections as well as inspire and mobilize healthy living advocates. Recognising that women and young girls are most vulnerable, many of our programmes are specifically designed to address their unique challenges. 3. HIV Support & Family Strengthening HACT provides targeted support to at risk groups such as orphaned and vulnerable children and gogos (grandmothers) caring for such children. Through our innovative programmes we work to reduce social deprivation and build the capacity and resilience of local families in need. 4. Economic Empowerment HACT’s award-winning social enterprise initiatives provide sustainable job creation and poverty alleviation.

  • At Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust's Hospice & Palliative Care Unit, our patients recently spent time creating beautiful mosaics as part of their holistic care. These creative activities offer more than just relaxation—they provide a crucial outlet for self-expression, mental stimulation, and emotional healing. Engaging in art allows our patients to focus on something positive and uplifting, contributing to their overall well-being. We celebrate the creativity, colour, fun and laughter which is generated! A special note of thanks to our dedicated volunteers, Linda and Daisy, for faithfully visiting each week and for helping to incorporate such activities into our care! #HolisticCare #PatientSupport #CreativeHealing #RespiteCare #HillcrestAIDSCentre #ArtsInCare #EmotionalWellbeing #MosaicTherapy #CommunityCare #PalliativeCare #unconditionalloveandhope #loveinaction

On 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘆, we proudly celebrate our commitment to food security in vulnerable communities. At Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, our plant nursery and the food tunnel, sponsored by Old Mutual, grow a wide variety of fresh, nutritious vegetables used to feed patients in our Respite Unit. Any surplus produce is distributed to those in need in the Valley, ensuring no food goes to waste. Through our 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗟𝗢 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, we are empowering young women from the Valley to start and run their own mini-agricultural businesses, fostering entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency. We are also proud to support the 𝗚𝗼𝗴𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀, where grandmothers cultivate fresh produce for their families and communities, creating sustainable food sources. Together, we are working towards a future where every family has access to nutritious food and the skills to grow it. Want to get involved and help us continue this journey of hope and sustainability? 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 for the food tunnels, Indalo Project and our Gogo Community Gardens. • Breast Cancer Awareness: Early Detection Saves Lives HACT's Hospice & Palliative Care Unit cares for patients with late stage AIDS and Cancer. Every woman we've admitted with breast cancer is one too many! This month we are once again promoting awareness and the practice of self checks for all women, of all backgrounds, in all communities! Performing regular breast self-checks is one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early. By familiarising yourself with how your breasts normally look and feel, you can identify any changes — like lumps, thickening, or skin changes—promptly. Early detection significantly increases treatment success and survival rates. Take a few minutes each month to perform a self-check and encourage others to do the same. Together, we can raise awareness and save lives. Do you know someone who has been impacted by breast cancer? Woza Moya is pinked out for Breast Cancer Awareness month with plenty of options for you to show your solidarity and support. 💞 #BreastCancerAwareness #EarlyDetection #SelfCheck #HealthMatters #BreastHealth #FightBreastCancer #CancerPrevention #unconditionalloveandhope #strongertogether #loveinaction

  • Some of HACT's Hospice & Palliative Care Team donned hats today in support of Palliative Care for Children South Africa (PatchSA)'s annual awareness campaign! Initiated by the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) in 2014, the #HatsOn4CPC campaign is celebrated annually on the second Friday in October. It is a day of action to not only show support for children and their families, but also shine a light on the need to end the inequality of children’s palliative care provision in South Africa and around the world. While the majority of HACT's admitted patients in our 24-bed unit are adults, we do also care for children and teens. Children’s palliative care is a compassionate and holistic approach to caring that provides pain and symptom management alongside emotional, social, and spiritual support for seriously ill children and their family members, ultimately seeking to ensure an improved quality of life for all. HACT.....people who care for people, and also support other people who care! #unconditionalloveandhope

  • Today is not only Mental Health Day but it is also World Homeless Day. Homelessness is an issue which many of us don't what do to about or how best to respond. Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) recognises that homelessness, mental health and poverty can be deeply intertwined. Many vulnerable families face the daily struggle of food insecurity, stress and trauma as well as unemployment, pushing them closer to homelessness. By addressing root causes such as poor health, hunger and unemployment, HACT is working to prevent homelessness, one family at a time. Our food security and financial empowerment initiatives teach sustainable farming, provide access to resources, and create income-generating opportunities which empower people to feed themselves and secure a better future. Through our Gogo's Home & Community Gardens, we are equipping vulnerable households with the knowledge and tools to grow their own vegetables thereby improving food access and creating long-term sustainability. Woza Moya, our largest economic empowerment project, involves more than 350 local artisans who bead and craft for a sustainable income, while our Youth Empowerment Programme offers work placement for skills development. The Indalo project is offering young women the opportunity to become Agripreneurs, to provide a sustainable income stream but to also promote improved food security within the Valley of 1000 Hills. Our Youth Adherence Clubs are supporting youth living with HIV to be better equipped to deal with the stigma and challenges of their treatment journey. This World Homeless Day, we call on you to support these vital programmes which are changing lives and ensuring that individuals and families have opportunities to thrive in safe, dignified and sustainable ways. Find out how you can partner with us! • One of the Smart Starter funders generously provided a stipend for our gold grads to attend a Business Onboarding Workshop and to receive training on how to use the Funda App. The training taught them about income and expenditure and how to load their "business" data into the app to produce an income statement. This forms part of their entrepreneurship training. #educationmatters #youthdevelopment #unconditionalloveandhope #EducationInAction #entrepreneurjourney
