Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation of members of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt. As part of this delegation visit, we kicked last week off with a visit to the honourable Deputy Minister of Transport Mr Mkhuleko Hlengwa from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). Conversations centred around the current work of the Government of National Unity, the Ministry of Transport and on how cooperation between Germany and South Africa can be deepened with respect to the transport sector and beyond. Two of the primary goals of the Transport Department are to decrease the number of traffic accidents in South Africa and to improve the quality of roads to help private business thrive.

"Artificial Intelligence: Challenges and Opportunities for Young People" On 27 September, join the Centre for the Advancement of Non-Racialism and Democracy (CANRAD) in cooperation with KAS for an expert dialogue on this timely topic. The event will take place in the Council Chambers, South Campus, Nelson Mandela University, Gqeberha. To sign up, please e-mail vuyo.Ndodana@mandela.ac.za. CANRAD is located at Nelson Mandela University and provides an intellectual and social space for debate on the complexities of post-apartheid South Africa as we seek to establish a new non-racial and democratic social and economic order. Today we supported a meeting of faith leaders as they exchanged perspectives on their role in South Africa’s journey to a more just and democratic nation. Amongst the valuable observations was that public policy must be driven by moral principals and that the mere adherence to legal legislation is not enough. Thank you to the CDDC Trust, EFSA, SACBC and Bishop Sipuka for hosting this valuable annual forum.

Last week I had the honor of organising my first scholarship trip for the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. Together with Chikondano A. Daza, Joanna Kęsicka and Kim Prox, I planned a seminar focusing on the situation in South Africa after the recent elections. We are a group of German scholarship holders from various academic disciplines and spent three days in Johannesburg and three days in Cape Town. During our time in South Africa, we met with experts in history, economics, politics and a number of people from the civil society. We gained a lot of insight into the country and had on a number of fruitful discussions. I‘d like to thank KAS South Africa, especially Gregor Jaecke and Dr. Christoph Wiedenroth, for making this trip possible. Their continuous support and tireless efforts made it an unforgettable experience for all. I look forward to organising more seminars in 2025!

Happy Wednesday! 🔖 Our KAS Scholar Busisiwe Thabisa Sibizo authored Chapter 3 in DDP Democracy's 'Ten Years of South Africa's National Development Plan,' analyzing the #NDP's progress, #challenges, and #future opportunities. She highlights how the pandemic has exposed and intensified deep-rooted issues like unemployment, inadequate public services, and inequality, complicating efforts to build a more equitable state as envisioned in the National Development Plan 2030. 📌 Worth a read: https://lnkd.in/dkezHDCq #KAS4Democracy #NDP #SouthAfrica #scholar

The Cape Town leg of the stipends South Africa trip was highly engaging. From exploring local #townships to discussions on #corruption, #sustainability, and the role of churches post-apartheid, a lot of valuable topics were covered. We visited our partners at the FW de Klerk Foundation and gained insights into parliamentary work, discussed freedom of speech in the country as well as the role of churches in post-Apartheid South Africa. It was a valuable experience, and we all walked away with valuable insights. #CapeTown #KAS4Democracy #SouthAfrica Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry Klaus Kotzé Rachel Fischer (Ph.D) Jule Heckscher Zinhle Geluk Scelo Mthimkhulu Christina Teichmann Claudia Broell Daniela Ellerbeck
