We are determined to earn our place in South Africa’s growing technology sector, so we successfully hosted our second Graduate Hackathon at Mutual Place on 14, 15 and 16 August 2024. To fully aid participants in leveraging solutions, the Old Mutual Graduate Hackathon provided exposure to AI and machine learning via an AWS Cloud environment. Additionally, mentors were assigned to provide UI, UX, Data Science and/ or Analytics guidance and insight, whilst encouraging all participants to be mindful about employing a Design Thinking approach to problem solving. “These students are at a pivotal point – they have the power to define an upcoming chapter of their lives that could fundamentally impact the career path they choose to pursue,” said May Govender, Old Mutual South Africa, Group Chief Information Officer. Last week saw several leaders and experts at the inaugural Old Mutual Thought Leaders Forum confront the critical issues impacting retirement outcomes in South Africa. "The forum aims to create a collective understanding of the big picture—the South African retirement landscape, to get to the heart of the challenges, and to offer solutions based on research, insights, experience, and expertise," said Prabashini Moodley Old Mutual Corporate Managing Director. Our 2023 Old Mutual Corporate Retirement Reality study reveals stark findings: while 72% of pre-retirees expect to be financially secure in retirement, only 56% of recent retirees can actually support themselves. Moreover, 44% of pre-retirees anticipate being debt-free by retirement, yet just 27% of recent retirees have managed to achieve this. These figures highlight a significant gap between expectations and reality, underscoring the urgent need for effective retirement planning and financial education.
