Combining traditional investigative reporting with data analysis and geo-mapping to expose eco-offences
About us
Oxpeckers is an award-winning non-profit media company that combines traditional investigative reporting with data analysis and geo-mapping tools to expose eco-offences and track organised criminal syndicates. Named after small brown birds that remove parasites from ecosystems, Oxpeckers has a network of Associates based in Africa and elsewhere who specialise in environmental reporting. We tell complex stories visually using dynamic infographics, “single story” animated maps and data visualisation to augment more traditional story packages. Oxpeckers is developing the most comprehensive database of eco-offences in Africa. The resulting reportage is published online and through media partners, with the underlying evidence and other source materials available to other media and environmental guardians for use in their own work.

Oxpeckers Investigative Environmental Journalism reposted this
I am immensely inspired by the work Oxpeckers Investigative Environmental Journalism has been doing to track both the technical progress and social implications of the #energytransition in Mpumalanga.
IMPACTS: Inspired by Mia Malan, Oxpeckers created this graphic for our #PowerTracker project. It's a handy snapshot of the footprint of our data-driven geo-journalism project in Mpumalanga, SA's energy capital, over the past 18 months. 👀 Head here for the investigations: https://lnkd.in/drzGY3Ra 👀 Here for the tracking tool: https://lnkd.in/djrfPWxU 👀 And please keep an eye on oxpeckers.org for future developments. Thanks to The African Climate Foundation and New Economy Hub for their support & guidance

Oxpeckers is proud to be a partner on the #BurningSkies project led by EIF, in partnership with the European Investigative Collaborations, that exposes the largest polluters in Africa and the Middle East when it comes to gas flaring. Look out for our Angola contribution this coming Monday!
💥 BREAKING: A new large-scale cross-border investigation has just been released https://lnkd.in/e3mD724Y It reveals vastly underreported gas flaring by the fossil fuels giants, endless promises to do away with it that were never accomplished, and terrible consequences for the environment, climate and human health. 🔥 “Burning Skies: Behind Big Oil’s toxic flames” was developed by Environmental Investigative Forum - EIF, a global consortium of environmental investigative journalists, in partnership with the European Investigative Collaborations network and their media partners, Daraj Media, SourceMaterial and Oxpeckers Investigative Environmental Journalism, and in cooperation with 14 more media partners. ❗The journalists looked into loads of data, as well as travelled to the gas fields, and take you to BP, ENI, Shell, TotalEnergies and Perenco’s facilities across Africa and the Middle East.
