Managing life as a professional living with mental illness can be challenging, but with the right strategies, it's possible for you to do your job while also prioritising your wellbeing. Acknowledge your reality and approach your mental health with intention and care. Here’s some pointers to help you do that. 🏋🏽♀️ Balance Work and Life Overworking, chronic stress and burnout can exacerbate mental health symptoms, so it’s crucial that you set boundaries. Be mindful of how much energy you’re dedicating to work versus personal time. Establishing a routine that includes designated time for rest, relaxation and personal activities is key. It’s important to know when to step away from work, take breaks throughout the day and most importantly: not let work consume your personal life. Advocating for flexible work arrangements, such as remote work or adjusted hours, can also help you to manage stress. 🪫 Be Holistic Recognise that your mental health is enmeshed with your physical, emotional and social wellbeing. As a professional, it’s important to focus not only on your work but also on your overall health. This could involve prioritising sleep, exercise and eating nutrient-dense foods, which play crucial roles in regulating mood and energy levels. Incorporating practices such as meditation, mindfulness or even different therapies into your routine can help you stay grounded and manage stress properly. Additionally, building a strong support network is essential. Whether it’s friends, family, colleagues or mental health professionals, having people to talk to can alleviate stress. Don’t hesitate to seek help or take time off when needed. It's vital to recognise that caring for your mental health is as important as any professional task. ❤️ Accept Your Reality Managing your reality as a professional who lives with mental illness means accepting that you may need to adjust your lifestyle to prioritise your mental health.
