📊 Numbers that matter, science that saves lives and money – SACEMA makes it look easy as π (pi)! This #PiDay and #IDM314, we celebrate the power of numbers - and the power of epidemiological modelling to shape public health and contribute to economic resilience. Just as π is infinite, so is the impact of data-driven decision-making in preventing disease, strengthening health systems, and protecting economies. We’re honored to receive the Societal Impact Award from the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC), recognizing how our work in #infectiousdiseasemodelling continues to drive lasting change. Our research has: 🥧 Guided South Africa’s #COVID19 response through real-time epidemic tracking. 🥧 Developed the HIV Incidence Estimator for more accurate HIV incidence estimates, adopted globally. 🥧 Contributed to World Health Organization-led conversations on cervical cancer elimination strategies. 🥧 Provided #TBmodelling expertise and data to develop meaningful epidemiological models. 🥧 Trained 700+ researchers in advanced #epidemiologicalmodelling across Africa. 📢 Stay informed! Follow us for updates on our latest research and breakthroughs. 🔗https://lnkd.in/d-iinAZE #PublicHealth #Epidemiology #GlobalHealth #HealthEconomics #InfectiousDiseases Frank Tanser Eugene Cloete

❗Advancing the fight towards ending tuberculosis in South Africa❗ The 55th Union World Conference on Lung Health took place in Bali, Indonesia, from November 12th to 16th. Hosted by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union), which has been advancing lung health globally since 1920, the conference remains a beacon for driving better prevention and care for tuberculosis and related diseases. This year, our Junior Researcher, Lauren Brown, proudly represented SACEMA by presenting her work on estimating the impact of interventions aimed at improving linkage to care - a critical step in tackling the TB epidemic. Her analysis involved adapting an existing transmission-dynamic model of TB in South Africa, developed by a group of experts from the Desmond Tutu TB Centre and SACEMA. Beyond her presentation, Lauren had the opportunity to connect with experts from around the globe. From national-level policymakers to modellers, innovators in diagnostic tools, and specialists in treatment regimens for children and adults, the networking opportunities were as dynamic as the conference itself. Reflecting on the experience, Lauren praised the conference for its exceptional organization and shared that the toughest challenge was deciding which of the many engaging sessions to attend! Lauren extends her heartfelt thanks to the TB Modelling and Analysis Consortium (TB MAC) for funding this incredible opportunity, as well as to Dr Florian Marx and Dr Cari van Schalkwyk for their invaluable input in this work. Top picture: Lauren attended a modelling course led by TB MAC; photo obtained from Prof Richard White at LSHTM. 🌍Upcoming World AMR Awareness Webinar on 22 November: Combatting Antimicrobial Resistance in Neonatal Care 🌍 Neonatal sepsis is a leading cause of death for newborns in the first 28 days of life, and sub-Saharan Africa has the highest mortality rate! We’re proud to feature SACEMA researcher Dr. Larisse B.olton, a NeoNET AFRICA team member, who applies a data science approach to combat neonatal sepsis. By using regional sepsis surveillance data, Dr. Bolton’s work informs evidence-based antibiotic selection, aiming to reduce mortality rates among African newborns affected by AMR. This year’s #WAAW theme, "Educate. Advocate. Act Now," emphasises the urgent need for global action to address AMR, a growing crisis impacting human and animal health, food production, and the environment. Join #NeoNETAFRICA for a free webinar on 22 November focused on tackling #AntimicrobialResistance in neonatal care. Featured Speakers: - Prof. Angela Dramowski, Stellenbosch University, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences - Dr. Jonathan Strysko, Princess Marina Hospital, Botswana - Tinashe Mwaturura, BRTI, Zimbabwe What to Expect: "Innovative Solutions to Combat Antimicrobial-Resistant Neonatal Infections in African Hospitals," will feature African experts, sharing breakthrough approaches, impactful case studies, and discussing ways to protect our most vulnerable patients. 📚 Educate - Gain insights into the impact of AMR on neonatal health and African healthcare systems. 💬 Advocate - Learn how interdisciplinary collaboration and data-driven solutions are advancing AMR efforts in high-burden regions. 🚀 Act Now - Be inspired by actionable solutions implemented in African hospitals to protect our most vulnerable. 🦠 SACEMA’s Modelling Work to Support Global Polio Eradication 💉 This #WorldPolioDay, we’re proud to share about our polio modelling work. By leveraging district-level data on vaccination coverage, live births, and population sizes from 2017 to 2022, SACEMA’s Modelling and Analytics Response Team showed that there was varying susceptibility to poliovirus type 2 among children under five across South Africa. Susceptibility ranged from as high as 30% in some districts to as low as 2% in others, highlighting significant variation across the country. This new method of determining population-level immunity addresses concerns raised by World Health Organization on the validity of using zero-dose children as a metric for susceptibility. 📊 Results from our polio modelling work help public health decision-makers to understand and respond to polio risks, supporting the ongoing efforts to prevent polio resurgence in the region.🌍 📢 Interested in joining our efforts? Apply for an MSc project by 31 October: https://lnkd.in/dT6PzmbP Together with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we’re imagining a #PolioFreeFuture. #EndPolioNow #VaccinesWork #PublicHealth #GlobalHealth
