What is electricity wheeling? It involves the buying and selling of electricity through an existing grid. Our home office in Brackenfell is now wheeling renewable electricity, marking us one of the first businesses to wheel renewable power through the City of Cape Town’s energy grid. “In 2023, our consumption of renewable energy nearly doubled to 103,234 MWh from 54,138 MWh in the previous year. With renewable electrons now flowing through Cape Town’s energy grid, we are another step closer to our climate goals of being carbon neutral by 2050,” says Sanjeev Raghubir, Chief Sustainability Officer at the Shoprite Group. Eastern Highlands, our private-label bottled water, plays an important role in our ongoing commitment to finding sustainable solutions for clean water access. A percentage of the proceeds from every purchase of 500ml and 1.5L Eastern Highlands bottled water sold at all Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets nationwide will go to the newly established Act for Change Water Fund. One of the Fund’s first projects will be to sink a borehole at a school in Verulam, providing the community at large with access to clean drinking water. This Mandela Day, we are encouraging Checkers Sixty60 customers to support non-profit Meals on Wheels by donating non-perishable food items through the Sixty60 app to any one of five designated collection points. Checkers Sixty60 will match the value of all donations made between 15-18 July and refund all delivery fees. Through the generous support of customers, we were able to donate more than R830 000 worth of groceries to Meals on Wheels SA in 2023, and the challenge is on to exceed last year’s contribution. Donations can be made from anywhere in South Africa. #LetsActForChange #MandelaDay #ShopriteGroup #CheckersSixty60 #MealsOnWheels #WorkThatMatters
