Well, that was quick! After passing unanimously with a few light amendments in the Senate, the California Assembly accepted the Senate's amendments in a 59-10 vote the next day. The bill now awaits signature on Governor Newsom's desk, setting the stage for California to become the second state to ban octopus farming and the first to ban the sale of farmed octopus meat. 💙 🐙 See the link in the comments for more information.

When I read this summary of MPA Day 2024 I shed a tear of happiness. I still can't believe that our tiny, no-budget campaign to build awareness of the value of #MarineProtectedAreas to people and nature is now celebrated internationally. And it's all thanks to some amazing people - our friends at Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance and HELCOM - Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission, and of course our team in South Africa who have been with us since 2021 - Two Oceans Aquarium, Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation Youth for Marine Protected Areas (Youth4MPAs) Flow Communications (South Africa) Olivia S.. It is not organisations that make things happen - it is people - so to all of the amazing people in the MPA Day family - thank-you for your passion and hard work.
