EMPOWERING || NETWORKING || DEVELOPING Established in 2010, Women in Mining South Africa (WIMSA) is an independent volunteer-run, free-membership non-profit organisation. We provide an empowering network to support, inspire and develop the progression of women working in the mining industry in South Africa. We organise professional events to provide a networking opportunity for our 4,000+ members. We are working to establish partnerships with government and industry. We present at local and regional and sometimes international mining events and conferences. We contribute to thought leadership in industry publications and through our engagement with industry issues. We facilitate mentoring relationships between mentors and mentees.

    Earlier this year, at the inaugural 𝗪𝗶𝗠𝗦𝗔 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺, we had the privilege of engaging with incredible women like Dr Urishanie Govender, previously Director EHS-ESG at 𝗩𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮 𝗭𝗶𝗻𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, now Chief Sustainability Officer at Harmony Gold Mining Company.   • 📢 Discover Your Future in Mining by Exploring This Week's Featured Career in Mining. Are you passionate about geology and interested in finance? Consider a dynamic career as a 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 in the mining industry. As a Commercial Account Manager, you’ll need a BSc Geology Honours degree, with optional short courses in basic finance. Your journey begins with three years to earn your BSc degree and an additional year for your Honours. Continuous professional development is key to staying current in this ever-evolving field. In school, focus on Mathematics, Science (Physics and Chemistry), and perhaps Geography or Business Science. Essential skills for this role include excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, and an understanding of Geological Software, typically gained on the job as a Technical Geologist. Experience in technical roles is highly recommended to enhance your understanding of value propositions. Remember, kindness and patience can open many doors, yet being assertive and setting boundaries is crucial. So how do you know if this career is right for you? If you have a passion for mining operations and exploration projects, a strategic and problem-solving mindset, and a love for networking, this career could be a perfect fit. A good sense of humor and a great deal of patience will also serve you well. Promotion and growth opportunities are abundant. You can grow within a department or explore different departments based on your experience and courses completed. With a Geology Honours degree, the possibilities are endless.
