Located in an art deco building in the heart of the city centre, this two-bedroom apartment has been beautifully renovated to reflect the culture, art, and vibrancy of Cape Town. It also highlights the owner’s passion for fired and glazed clay. Owned and renovated by talented local ceramicist Mervyn Gers, whose dinnerware range is loved by high-end restaurants, luxury lodges and private homes both locally and abroad, the apartment is a showcase of Mervyn’s career, filled with works from the start of his journey as a creative. Featuring 3.5-meter high ceilings, the apartment’s decor elements are a perfect mix of Victorian, Deco, Mid-century, 70s German brutalism, and kitsch to create harmonious and visually captivating interiors. Insights from the Cape Town Furniture Week Workshop 🪑 The one-night event, held at the Haldane showroom in Salt River, curated thriving and engaging conversations where insightful tips were shared with members of the South African design industry. Here are some key takeaways: ▪️ Positioning is crucial – avoid underselling by charging what South African products are truly worth in the global market. ▪️ Attending the right trade fairs can help connect with potential distributors and generate valuable leads. ▪️ Does every product need a story? It depends. Sometimes it’s necessary, sometimes not. ▪️ South African designers should be bold and confident, recognising their products as world-class. ▪️ Integrating traditional and new-age marketing techniques can broaden your brand’s reach. ▪️ Don’t hesitate to seek external marketing help, including finding the right media partners to optimise your sales channels. ▪️ Opportunities lie in collaborations and creating a layered product range for different price points. ▪️ Building good business systems early on establishes a strong foundation for growth. ▪️ Systems should be ingrained in the business, not just in individuals, to ensure consistency. 💭 Your Thoughts? What strategies have helped you position your brand effectively in the market?
