We are African women taking leadership to enhance our participation in the sanitation sector.
About us
Women and girls are most affected by poor sanitation but still remain under represented in key decision-making positions and in the sector broadly due to limited training, leadership skills and lack of exposure to role models. We are women seeking to change the narrative; a women facilitated to be in charge of her own sector is a woman with power to make changes in her community and country.

Girls Take Over Luapula Water🎊 Over 40 girls from 8 different schools in Mansa District of Luapula Province recently participated in the 3rd Girls Take Over of a Commercial Water Utility. Held under the theme ‘Invest in women: accelerate progress,’ in line with this year’s International Women’s Day, the event was organized by the Skills Advisory Group for 💧Water Supply and 🚽Sanitation (SAG-WSS) with the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Corporation and Development (BMZ) funded Thrive Project implemented by GIZ Zambia. Dressed in appropriate workers uniforms, the girls had a tour of the Luapula Water and Sanitation Company water treatment plant and were introduced to the various services offered at the water utility. They took part in hands-on activities in water distribution at the treatment plant. In addition, they received career guidance during a mentorship session with African Women sanitation professionals Network-Zambia chapter. The Girls Take Over is meant to boost interest in a career in the water sector. Some girls immediately shared their excitement: “Only a few girls and women are involved in the water sector, so this event has encouraged me to become a (water) engineer so that I can become an ambassador for other girls,” said Margaret Simutono, a pupil from Mansa Trades Secondary School. The event was graced by the presence of the Luapula Provincial Permanent Secretary, Mr. Mighty Mumba who encouraged the participants to take up technical courses in the water sector. Also present were representatives from NWASCO, SAG-WSS, the District Education Board Secretary office in Mansa, and other stakeholders in the water and sanitation sector. Another Girls Take Over is planned for Livingstone on 15th March to welcome Southern Water as a new member in the SAG WSS. Happy International Women’s Day!
